5p bag charge, isn't it great news?

There's been some grumblings about the adoption of the 5p bag charge that supermarkets now have to charge you. Mainly by the way England is implementing it versus how it has already been rolled out in Wales. So for smaller retailers, they don't have to charge for bags, which can introduce some consumer confusion.

Here is a great info-graphic from Personalise.co.uk that shows the benefits that Wales has experienced since 2011 when they introduced charges, and what England could expect.

Seems like win win all round. Any thoughts or anyone disagree?

I went shopping last night, supposedly for cat food and a loaf of bread.

£45 later i realised i hadn't got any bags so bought 2 x "bag for life" at 5p each. These will be replaced once/when they become unusable.

Not sure if i will remember to take these bags back, at 5p a pop its not like its costing me a fortune to buy 2 or 3 each time i go shopping.

Is that the wrong attitude

sort of ,lol ... But it is sexism and discriminates against the men ;) .. A women can easily hide a plastic bag in her purse .... Where the heck do men put it , I already have a mobile phone and keys in 1 wallet in the other lol

Before every street in the UK became awash with plastic wheelie bins, we or certainly in my local area were given bio degradable plastic bags for our garden waste. Why they don't use this for your normal carrier bags is beyond me. These bags didn't take long to degrade around 4-6 weeks if it had been raining during this time, lost count of the times they fell apart in my hands...

Are we over working the problem here? Do you not just carry the empty bag in and stick it in either the trolley or basket for use at the end?

I can't talk though - as i said above i never remember to take bags with me, yet i have around 100 bags in 2 other shopping bags in a cupboard at home.

I'd put those in the boot if only i remembered that they were there

I must admit, I thought supermarkets had started doing this, or at least did it for  awhile? I remember now having plastic bags in the back of my car which had started to fall to pieces, but I haven't seen them do that for a while.

Maybe it was a trial, maybe I'm losing my marbles?

You need to get a man bag...  But seriously, Clive is right, it's a bag, hardly difficult to carry it, they fit in pockets etc. if you really want to. You can fold them pretty small. Or just straight in the trolley/basket from the car.

yeah I know, was only kidding around with that post .. I am not at all fussed over the 5p tbh, they are of better quality and will get used again by my wife or will put them in the boot of the car for later use when I go shopping, it's just remembering to take them with you is the hard part

Some concern over the environmental impact of bio-degradable plastic bags back in 2011...
