Pokemon Go - Business opportunity or do you just feel old?

I've got to be honest, I'm trying to get excited about the thought of running around the streets zapping imaginary things with my mobile phone, but the kettles on and I need a sit down

We first talked about augmented reality (the technology behind Pokemon Go) back in 2012, and it seemed very exciting and made QR codes look antiquated.

But we've note seen anything particularly exciting until now, as the Pokemon marketing machine rolls in action.

If you have missed the hype, in a nutshell you download an app to your phone, and run around like a lunatic chasing little cartoon characters in the real world, that you can only see by looking at your phone. Apparently you can team up, fight each other, and that's about as much I know.

But from a business opportunity, sponsorship is the next big thing, with sponsored locations being offered on a cost per visit. So the corner shop could have a big advert that pops out as players approach it. No doubt we will see all sorts of marketing opportunities and new styles of creative as advertisers explore a new media.

So I imagine for early adopters and companies with a creative outlook there could be some interesting opportunities.

At least it will get kids out of their bedrooms and running round the streets, although there seems to be a genuine concern of people getting run over as they run around staring at their phone screens!

If you still can't make head or tale of it, here is the official trailer:

So what do you think?

A great marketing opportunity, a new way to keep fit, or are you sat there like me thinking whatever next?

I have seen a few people randomly walking about with their phones out, but to be honest doesn't that just about cover every teenager on the planet

Did see one young girl with her dad Saturday night, under a road bridge in Redditch with her phone out, so guessing they were Pokemoning.

My boys, now mid & late teens were Pokemon mad- thankfully they have long grown out of it so no Pokemon apps for me

There was an article in yesterdays daily mail saying food outlets were paying £100 a day to attract gamers to their premises.... Not sure what its all about and have absolutely no intention of finding out.... But think I would not be too happy if I were to go out for the evening if everyone was playing on their phones...

Thanks,
Barney

In my opinion, I think Pokemon opportunity is grand. It is already the most popular game in history and is likely to become more popular on Android. It serves a great opportunity for small business. For example, if you're a food or beverage establishment, take great advantage of nearby Pokestop and use the in-game "lure module" to attract people to catch Pokemon while patronizing your establishment.

Sorry parasush, you've just made me feel really old

Isn't monopoly the most popular game in history?

No I've just shared my views, the way I think.

Absolutely, it is not the monopoly.

From a marketing point of view, this is pretty interesting as a new medium enters the mix and fights for your marketing budget. So possible big wins for early adopters, but this is going to be for deep pockets. From a personal point of view, I find it strange grown adults as well as kids like to run around after imaginary things, so I think I'm in the too old camp.

My views & opinions are my own

I think it's a great idea to get kids and adults moving around, especially as it's now school holidays where I live.

Having spent time recently with my 11-year-old niece in grounds of church opposite her house, I still can't see the attraction but she doesn't have much patience when explaining these things, but I got the general idea. Thankfully, we only had to wait 30 minutes before "capturing" two Pokemon.  Not many other people about.  When I asked her what she did about it during the night, she replied "Daddy says that's taking it too far".
