Hi Everybody,
I'd like to introduce myself, my name Wes Saunders and I own a company called 'WS DESIGN SERVICES' and we 'Design, Artwork and Print' just about anything you can think of. I'm completely new to this 'posting' thing, so please bear with me if I don't do things correctly or break any 'unwritten rules' or something like that...
I wanted to post a little information that I have come to believe over the years (and after doing much reasearch on the w.w.w. I now know I'm spot on with my assessment) will be the difference between companies that do get enquiries and companies that don't.
In the simplest terms that I can put it.....
NO LOGO... NO CHANCE OF LEADS!!!
BAD LOGO... NO LEADS!!!
A FAMILY MEMBER, OR A 'I DESIGNED IT MYSELF LOGO' .... STILL NO LEADS!!!!!
OUT OF DATE LOGO.... YEP... YOU'VE GUESS'D IT - NO LEADS!!!!!!!
NEED I GO ON.........!!!!!!!
This obviously applies to all of the corporate image that you reflect and not just the logo itself, just because you loved something 10 years ago, when you dreamed of owning your own company, that doesn't mean that you should stick to that idea now, now that its become a real thing that you can touch and mould.
REASEARCH
I have found that the reasearch that you've put into figuring out what your logo should reflect is as important as the logo itself. Look at all of your competitors, what works for them? Who got alot of interest? What drew you to see them above their competitors when you were searching through them all? Try to keep records of what caught your eye, these are the attributes you need to reflect when creating your own logo.

Get this wrong and you'll be throwing good money after bad!!!

Welcome aboard Wes. ![]() Normally people do a quick intro in the introductions, but you've raised an interesting topic, so have moved your post into the Sales & Marketing Forum (as long as you don't turn into a blantant self promo ![]() Good point ref the logo, but personally I think this is only a small part of the equation. A great logo but poorly constructed site, or no obvious call to action is still unlikely to result in leads. Where as a good message, good call to action but poor logo is prob more likely to result in leads IMO.
Hello and welcome Wes. Interesting point, I personally, am not to sure about the LOGO idea you have there. Surely a logo is not actually that important in modern business, I think it is more about the name of your company. If you're mainstream then maybe it is useful to have a logo, but for a lack of leads, I doubt it is down to the logo. Interesting post though, and I look forward to hearing more. DynaShop
I agree with Dyna, the name is more important than the logo especially in small businesses. I think are company name is quite easy to remember and relates to are business so people can find us again and recommend us. This is reflected by the number of searches we get for WREL contact coming to our site (and in turn e-mailing us). I also know a good few small business owners who have no real logo, just the company name in basic font and this doesn't deter people from using their business. If we are talking larger companies then I can see your point, branding is more important but then you have a much larger audience.
I'll happily buy from a company with no logo if they can manage to spend three seconds running a spelling checker over their marketing blurb. I also give bonus points for correct use of apostrophes. Admittedly it's been a while since I've walked out of a shop that was advertising potatoe's and tomato's (probably because I shop online these days, come to think of it) but it has been a dealbreaker when I've been trying to buy something that requires a certain amount of intelligence on the part of the vendor. I think a logo is important in establishing a business brand but in terms of not getting leads due to 'no logo, bad logo, family member designed logo...' I disagree. I think it is far more important that the business can do what they say they can. I have done business with a number of contacts picked up through some of the forums with no websites, no logos and so far haven't been let down by them on any occasion. Not having a logo didn't deter me from using them; what got our business was that fact they did what they said they would do when they said they would.
I would agree that a good logo is important as instant recognition, especially when exhibiting at an event, but I am not convinced it is vital to generating sales. I believe a decent web site, keen prices and great service will work no matter what the logo looks like. Pamela
we've had quite a lot of feedback (since asking for a web site review in a few places) that our logo is rubbish (as well as other things that could be much improved on our web site). that doesn't seem to stop us selling our software, but given that just about everyone who has voiced an opinion on our web site has said "your logo is rubbish", it shows that the logo is quite an important consideration when looking at a web site. needless to say we are already working on a new logo so if you read this and think we have a fantastic logo then you're probably looking at the new one ![]() and it will be interesting to see how a new logo (as well as the other changes to the web site) affects sales. regards Tom amphis

They say you make a buying decision within a few seconds, so masses and masses of text won't sell, but clear concise visual images and information with obvious calls to action should do the job. I suppose a logo's all part of this. I'm going through similar pain, and currently in the early planning stages of a rebranding exercise. Every design/brand house we've spoken to so far has knocked our logo, which I've always loved ![]() But its always good to get outside impartial views, as you tend look at your own site through blinkered eyes!
Well, I think your logo is great. Don't forget that designers are in it for the money, so they would knock anything you chose to have - unless it was their design, of course! Pamela |
