Hi all
I am a newbie here so dont know if this is in the right place.... I hope so!

I am a young business women who has a very very limited budget. I got a website on Getting British Business Online which gives a free site for british small business's.

I am struggling on how I can get it into the top page on google on certain search terms. Is this search engine optimisation?

Sorry if I sound a bit dumb but websites are not my expertise!

No apologies needed, as a starter for 10, have a look through the SEO 101 thread, and see if any of it makes sense.

Then feel free to come back with any questions.

Unfortunately this is the problem with cheap sites, you get what you pay for, and do not have the power or editing ability needed to compete.

They could have 25,000 sign ups in the next 6 months but only a few success stories, much safer to bite the bullet and get a real website, and if you cant afford one, save up! I cannot afford a DB5 Aston Martin yet, but I will!

Yes you do get what you pay for but I guess for free you can't really complain if you don't have total control over the site's elements but I certainly wouldn't commit to any web site building tool that didn't give me control over title and description tags and the ability to verify the site with Google Webmaster Tools, Bing Toolbox, etc.

This is the reason why I always implement content management systems for my website from the very start so that it's already search engine optimized on site and also its easier for users with no web coding knowledge to update and manage the site themselves

you aren't going to rank top 10 in google for free when your competitors are spending the big bucks to get there.

You should start the promotion of your website from On-page optimization. It is a basic and important step in promotion of your website because it make your website SEO friendly using on-page optimization techniques like

* Select right keywords
* Add Meta(Keywords, Description..)
* Image optimization
* Title optimization
* Use H1/H2..
* Use unique content
* Try to Avoid flash, Java scripts, frames.. etc.

Then you should use Off-page optimization. In which you build quality backlinks for your website using link building techniques like

* Directory Submission
* Forum posting
* Article marketing
* Blog posting and commenting
* Press Release
* Ad-Classified
* Social bookmarking
* Link Bait
* Link Wheel
* Link Exchange
* Three way link building.. etc.
