Personally, I think the best ways are link bait, ie good content on your site so people will link to you, and going after some links with good anchor text, as your keywords.

Also depends on the size of your competition, popularity of the keywords etc. If it's a niche market, you could have it cracked in a few months, if its competitive, can take years.... (taken me 4 years to get to page 2 for some keywords )

If there's an easier way, I'm all ears

Hey RoseMary3,

It can sometimes take a couple of months for certain keywords to start moving. If you would like to provide us with the keywords you are trying to rank for we might be able to give you a bit more advice of how hard those will be (i'll understand if you would prefer not to post your keywords).

What have you been doing so far to try and improve your rankings?

A few things that really help are writing articles and having a link in the article or resource box linking back to your site. For example, ezinearticles is an article site where you can submit articles and they allow you to add links in a resource box at the bottom. The link should be pointing back to the site you wish to rank and the anchor text used should be the word you are trying to rank for.

You should also bookmark sites that have links back to your site. For example, once you ezinearticle is approved you should bookmark it.

Hope this helps.

If you PM me a couple of those keywords that have taken you 4 years to rank for i will have a look for you and see if there is perhaps anything you could do to give it an extra push!

If you want to improve your desire keyword, you first need to judge which keyword you targeting. If the keyword is less competitive then a few quality anchor text contextual links will job the done for you. If competition is too high than you need more quality as well as quantity links to get the top in the sarch engines.

You may also approach for Google Place. You can increase your local visit through this.

As a prolific article writer and submitter on the web I totally agree but when you are submitting to article submission sites don't waste time with the rubbish. A good site (like ezine) is one which:

1. allows links (even if it is only in the resource box;
2. Has a high page rank - it is more likely to be picked up by google and pushed up to the higher pages -and of course it will have good trafic
3. Perhaps most important. check the links are not "no-follow". Most article submission sites are in fact "no-follow" even in the resource box.
4. good content - if the article is not worth reading don't waste your time writing it!

You advised bookmarking sites that have links back to our own sites (eg when one of our ezinearticles is approved we should bookmark it).

What's the benefit please of bookmarking the sites?

I'm new to this area of work, as you'll realise!

Thanks for your help, Linda

First of all what is your keyword? What is the PR and domain age of your competitor ? First you should study who are your competitor and then only you can predict a time frame for the rise of your keyword.

Start doing link building where anchor text is your targeting keywords.
