And work on some edu and gov sites also and don't forget links from quality based no follow sites matters alot

I read somewhere yesterday (can't for life of me find the link) that edu and gov links had now been included in the link algo. Although they won't do you any harm, due to the fact these have now been spammed, they have lost some of their kudos.

It's more about relevance, allegedly, (I'm a bit more cynical here) if your site has a bunch of unrelated .gov .edu etc links, then you won't gain anything from them. What is gauged as related I guess is the next debate

Is a link from a govt site pointing to our business directory relevant? Or any more/less relevant than a link to an office supplies site? A massage parlour I can understand, but away from the obvious, who decides relevance?

I'm not sure about that either. I mean, if you are hanging around online, you would be at places you enjoy being at, so its means that its not always going to be specific to your business. Not everyone uses the net purely for marketing, so you are going to get links all over the place, people are also going to link your business to a lot of different sites online and they might not be niche specific either. You have pics on pinterest, a facebook page and your own personal blog, but everyone knows you as that person with that product, so they automatically link you to the business regardless.

One thing, I think, is that the more popular the technique (or more effective), the more its likely to be abused, and the faster its rendered null, or not worth the effort by Google.

Yes, you are right do follow links from high PR websites are the best. If you find do follow directory submission websites then this will be the best for generating better back links for websites promotion.

From what I have heard, gunning for only do-follow sites is one of the best ways to get google to take notice of your site - in a bad way. One needs a good mix of both dofollow and nofollow for any linkbuilding campaign to work effectively (is there an echo in here?)

The way I see it is this, a marketer needs to emulate a normal person. They aren't specific about where they go, or whether or not the site is dofollow or not, if they find something interesting (like we do on forums) we link to it, simples. A marketers job is to make sure web content meets those criteria, being interesting enough for others to link to, so it makes their linkbuilding campaign a little easier.

Its not about where the link is, its about the context in which the link is placed. Anchor texting has gotten into trouble as well because its been spammed to death, like .edu and .gov site links, and the innocent keywords meta tag in a website. Its also not always more about how many links there are as opposed to where they're placed.
