Link Building is the process of creating inbound links to ones own website. This can be done by reciprocal links, being listed in e-zines, newsletters, directories, search engines, etc. Link building is one of the best ways to make your site popular. There are few types of linking one of which is reciprocal links.

Reciprocal links or link exchanges is the process where two webmasters agree to show the other's link on their website. After link building when the number of sites which link to a particular site is known as link popularity which helps in the search engine ranking of a website.

There are many advantages of link building.

1. Link building helps in getting quality traffic from relevant sites which increases sales.
2. Also when there will be high quality incoming links the site will also be seen as a valuable resource.
3. Link building helps in creating awarness, visibility and credibility of your site.
4. The site also obtains wider search engine exposure.
5. It also helps the website get indexed by search engines.

while directories do offer backlinks to our sites, google seem to prefer contextual links more than anything else these days. publishing relevant articles on social media sites like squidoo, hubpages with anchor text backlinks, setting up blogs on various different Web 2.0 sites, and syndicating unque articles manually with top article sites will give you the high quality contextual links which will worth lot more than average directory submissions.

If your going to do the whole Squidoo, Gather, Hubpages thing you should look at making a small blog wheel say about 6 articles.

Link building is the very important task of SEO. I like article submission, social bookmarking, Blog commenting and Forum discussion are the best and effective way of link building.

I use a series of tiers rather than 'link wheels'.

The first thing to do is categorize every place you can get a link from into two groups 'A' and 'B'

I have about 100 in each group.

I link from A to B in any way, and then from B to the site I wish to promote.
BUT never from A to A, or B to B or from A to the main site.

Start by buying about 10 domains for your B sites and link into the main site then start promoting each one of the B sites individually from the A list, usually blogs, directories, articles etc etc

Isn't this what Google was trying to address on its latest update? ie all these automated scraper sites, which are just for the purpose of providing a link back to a main site?

Otherwise how could you maintain and update so many sites/domains? Or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

Well it is possible that the google update will hit me - but I'll see in time.

It is effectively what all SEO people seem to do so it's no extra work.

I've just added an extra tier so that istead of solictiing/adding/finding links to the main site, I add them to my secondary domains. I feel it gives me more control and effectively gives me acces to multiple PR3+ sites that I can create backlinks from.

Does it take more time - not really because most of the 'B' sites have staic content.
