Are QR Codes dead in 2011? Or is it just poor implementation?

Although huge in Japan, until recently a lot of us had no idea what QR codes were, until hdm did a post about them and put us all right.

(If you still have no idea, then have a look here).

But I will admit to being quite impressed with them and having seen appearing in different places can see quite a potential, but this doesn't seem to be shared by everyone. There have been some daft ideas, such as QR codes on underground station bill boards, with no mobile reception, or bill boards too high so the QR can't be read

Here's an interesting positive spin, and showcases some successful QR campaigns, as well as some of the less well thought out!
No, QR Codes Aren't Dead. They're Just Used Badly

Anyone else spotted any QR clunkers or want to share their own QR success story?

Perhaps the posters will still be up in 2012?

Also, I have no idea if the posters are generic or specific to the tube but if the posters are also put on billboards above the ground they're catering for that area too.... ....just saying

I came across this link which shows the impact of QR Codes and looks at who actually scans - great detail about demographics squarecode.biz/2011/10/who-really-scans-qr-codes/

Bless you, Steve. Thank you for the link yesterday.

Indeed, there have been far too many misused QR codes, especially those linking to a non-mobile page. They are a great addition to marketing, but only if used properly, and there are plenty of user guides around.

Just seen this article and thought I would share it

A boat, a QR code and a landingpage - ion interactive blog - The best landing pages start with ion's software and services.

As it says, if there is not a dedicated landing page for the QR code, it's a lost opportunity.

Do you think QR codes will take off? Seems to be a lot of talk about them on a lot if different forums. Tend to personally not really be bother with taking phone out of pocket to scan them but must admit there are some really good as well as bad application of them.

I'm guessing this could possibly be an age thing. I keep forgetting to take my mobile home let alone use it, and my texts are few and far between, let alone start using it for scanning qr codes.

But for youngsters, this will be come natural, they live on their phones, update their Facebooks on the fly, and if they want more info, they can scan a QR code. I can see them in restaurant, scanning menus and seeing the ingredients or a video of how the meal looks, with people like me tutting in the background

Just seen this recent video regarding direct mail and QR codes.

Direct Mail Package of the Week – “QR Codes” – Episode 7 | Direct Marketing

As you say, Steve, the "young folk" live on their phones.
