I am more worried about the data which is on the PC than the PC working again any suggestios?

Can't help with the serial number, don't want to get jailed by the MS Police, but have an Emergency Recovery Disk 2007 which should be able to get your data off as long as you can remember your admin password.

..but it's not too much of a worry because you've a backup? Please tell me you have.

If its one of its desktop ranges, you could just port the hard drive over to another computer, if you have one. You just need to set the hard drive as a slave and you should be able to get all your data off it.

Small update, I managed to use a linux live disc to get on and get all the data, but still haven't managed to do a factory restore of the pc

I have been looking around at microsoft, and it seems that you might have to contact them, and you might need to buy a new serial key. You mentioned having the disc, is there no sign of the serial key on the box? You could also go back to the store you bought it from, if its not too long back. Sometimes stores install one OS on many PC's and that leaves a person without a serial key (or a disc in most cases) so when they need to reinstall, they can't without buying a new OS.

Did you install new hardware into the PC? Maybe a new CPU or motherboard? I have noticed that with something like RAM, you don't get error messages, but as soon as one of the core components like the cpu and motherboard are replaced, xp has issues. It installs itself around the peripherals you have at that point in time on your PC, and if it loses something major, you need to fiddle with the xp discs etc. so it can update and reinstall software that is specifically meant for that peripheral. But it seems that a reinstall is in the PC's future

It all seems to be working, The issue with the xp disc was I was hoping to use it as a live disc

This isnt the case anymore and i have managed to get the data I just want to factory it

You could use system restore, and take the PC back to any date that had been set when software was installed. Still looking around on the net, will update if I find anything.
