UK and EU Cookie Policy

After doing a post on it last year, I'll confess to not getting around to doing any research, and paying enough attention to the impending cookie laws.

These were forced out across Europe and the UK's interpretation was rolled out in May 2011, but will not be enforceable until 26th May 2012.

You now need to inform visitors about the cookies used on your site, and give them the option not to use them.

A lot of it is open to interpretation, and some big websites such as yell.com and bt.com have pop up boxes with cookie options, others either haven't rolled it out yet or some just have cookie policies.

I'm about to sit down and crack on with ours, so has anyone else rolled this out yet on their sites?

Here are some useful links if you want to know more about the regulations. The first one by Affiliate Future is quite a good one, and the ICC is pretty clear, unlike the official policy

Cookies Regulations and the New EU Cookie Law - ICO

Be interesting to see how and if this is enforced, and is this a Europe policy or is it being implemented in different formats world wide?

Clive just forwarded me this link, it seems most of the UK Government websites won't be compliant by the deadline

This new regulation is a joke. I have seen a website with a solution to it but I am new and cannot post links just yet.

It will cost businesses lost revenue because of this.

If you want to see a site that has it rolled out, then look no further than the ICO site.

So is anyone else other than the UK getting impacted with this?

Somehow I can see Indian or Russian websites rolling this out...

Well after much head scratching, here's what we've rolled out.

(*Shamelessly hits the recommend button*) facebook account is in my boss' name though (always the ninja).

I like what you wrote though. It has all the bases covered neatly and I can actually understand it. I have seen some really confusing privacy policies that leave me confused.

Thanks,

I think this new policy is simply comical.

I do unfortunately agree that the internet in many cases is the wild wild west, we do need some form of regulation but the problem is when any Tom Dick or Harry can start a website in 15 minutes how do you go about enforcing such laws and policies. If the government were serious about enforcement they would need more staff members than the entire police force of the UK.

What I expect to happen is that the big internet sites will fall in line, since their on the radar of the authorities, if they don't they risk being made an example of. but of course the government won't apply the same rationale and stringent rules to their own websites.

Of course there will be a large proportion of sites that simply ignore the legislation or don't even know about it !!!

agree totally!

There will be a few sites that will be made an example of, and then the majority of websites will carry on as normal, as you say probably blissfully unaware.

In my opinion this is just another pointless waste of UK taxpayers money by faceless, unelected european beaurocrats.

Most people who use the internet understand that certain sites will leave cookies for various reasons; some intrusive, but most perfectly innocent.

And like in all things, those who have a sinister motive will continue regardless, but will simply cover their tracks more efficiently.

The main outcome of this rule will be to cause ordinary people more grief and add more annoying junk to an already cluttered internet. However there is also a real danger that some people may feel safer using the internet because they expect to be protected by the new cookie legislation and will be less stringent in their protection methods.
