Hi William

I've moved this to a new thread for you. Have you tried listing in the DMOZ and haven't heard anything, or do you want to know if its worth it?

What is DMOZ?

DMOZ is or was considered the main and most important directory to be listed in and have a link to your website from.

There is debate as to how effective it still is to be listed there but it's definitely not a bad thing.

DMOZ however manually approves it's thousands of submissions and there are not many human staff reviewers so people wait months or years and sometimes never even get listed.

The other one worth mentioning is the Yahoo directory which you can pay to be listed in

There was a time when everyone obsessed about it, me included

ODP - Open Directory Project

Google used to use it as a reference database, and a link from the DMOZ was highly prized. But its a voluntary community, and with that varies in quality with regional editors.

It can be notoriously difficult to get listed, and we've had various threads about it over the years.

If you can get in, go for it, but if you're struggling, then don't lose any sleep about it and move on.

Hi william04, i have been waiting over six months for my posting onto DMOZ. Shouldn't worry, use the wait to build other strong backlinks

Once upon a time DMOZ seemed to be the be all and end all. If you hadn't got your sites listed, you simply didn't know SEO, or so you where led to believe.

Nowadays, its still one of the better directories out there, and a listing can be beneficial, but don't expect to jump onto the first page of Google.

Use it as part of your overall efforts. Make the listing in DMOZ and if you have a a budget for it, also try Yahoo Dir, Best of The Web and a couple others.

Don't fret over how long it will take to get the listing in DMOZ. Simply add your site and move on. Check in a few months time to see if your listed, if not, re-add.

Focus on making your site the best it can be in between.

Some good advice above.

It could take months or years to get listed in DMOZ depending on the category.
Submit and forget.

Most general directories are no longer worth submitting to there are a few places that will help.

Local directories are great if you are a local business or specialist directories related to your business.

It would depend on the quality of the directory, and whether its a human edited one or a 'free' one.

I'd steer clear of the majority of 'free' directories, as you will find SEO companies bombard these with submissions and the waiting times can be months, for little or no reward. Plus, most of these 'free' directories then offer you the chance to 'get fast tracked' - if you pay. So now I'm paying for this low quality directory submission? I don't think so.

Paid submission for directories is OK, when the directory is:

Yahoo
Best of the web
Joe Ant (although you can apply to be an editor and get a free listing)
Clora
Plus others (PM me if you want list)

Remember - keep it as part of your overall daily/weekly SEO tasks.
