Windows 8 our first impressions - (Now upgrade to Windows 10)

We have upgraded 5 test machines here, not had any driver problems, and only 1 PC had any issues with applications.
When you download the upgrade you get the windows upgrade adviser that will scan for any compatibility issues so you'll get a heads up.
No crashing on any of the machines, no blue screen, seems a little quicker if anything.
The new start bar takes a bit of getting used to, but once you start to customise it a little, it becomes a great starting point, although less so for a non tablet.
A couple of nice features that have made our lives easier:

We have dual screen monitors and love the ability to span the desktop background and the task bar across the screens.
Especially to have the object on either screen one or two dock to the relevant task bar, very useful.

The new Remote Desktop connection App for the "Metro interface" allows multiple connections and the ability to easily cycle through them, its made managing servers from them much easier.

Also the built in support for ISO mounting, again very useful and seamless, no mounting ISOs to a drive then navigating to the drive, just simply double click on the ISO and they automount and you advance a screen and enter in the root folder of the ISO. Much quicker.

Somewhat useful, but very cool.. the new GUI for copying files, it gives a graph of the copy process and seems to be more accurate in its calculations. At least it doesn't seem to mention days or weeks anymore!!
Also the transfer speeds seem a tiny bit faster, and more stable.

Also worth noticing the payment / download and upgrade process was very smooth, I was expecting it to be harder. We got the copies for 24.99 (downloadable upgrade only - 2.2Gb)

Another thing we noticed is that there does seem to be significant speed benefits of making a clean install, which even with the upgrade license is possible, you are given the option to create a bootable USB / CD DVD.
Even against installing it as an upgrade from a fairly recent windows 7 install, the clean install seemed much more responsive. And believe me when I say, I have installed windows 1000s of times in every way known to man

Overall our experience has been a good one, these have been our easiest purchase and upgrades of any OS (including Apple!) I wonder though if we were just lucky as this is not very Microsoft like!!!!

But so far so good, and credit where credit is due, MS appear to have done a fairly good job.

After leaving my beloved XP and running Vista the dog, I'm pretty impressed with Win7 and in 64 bit, it seems to run well, haven't had any issues and my laptop is still nice and quick.

But I am a dinosaur and always go for windows classic settings to put it back to a familiar look and feel.

I'm not sure I'm ready for a whole new windows look, and interesting what you said about non tablets. So theres no way to customise it to a classic look?

Do you get the impression this is geared for tablets rather than laptops or PC's?

Great feedback though

The start screen is aimed at the tablet user, but once you get beyond that and onto the desktop, its very similar to Windows 7.
To be honest if you saw the desktop with out knowing it you'd think it was windows 7.

There is a third party app to change the start menu back to the normal windows 7 one, called start 8.

Thanks,

I'm currently using Win 7 at 64 bit and I've already get used to using it but I am still interested to try the Windows 8. In fact, I'm checking on laptops with freebies of Windows 8 upgrade. Thank you for an informative post regarding Win 8.

I have heard a lot about Window 8 being the best one in the Windows OS family, so yeah I am looking forward for the new OS for my laptop!
I did use the trial at the mart, it took ten minute for me to understand how to close a page!
Lets see what wonders it unfolds later!

To be honest I don't like the Windows 8 operating system because it's confusing and I feel that it is only applicable to touch screen laptops and PC's because of the thumbnail icons.

I'm not keen. It runs smooth and loads faster, but I do miss my toolbar.
In fact I found a tutorial the other day on how to get it back. I'm going to do that while I remember.

Just set up a new laptop in the Office and been exposed to Windows 8 for the first time

After battling with the new layout, decided to download Classic Shell and it's reverted to a Win7 layout.

Much better and means people can get working quicker again with things in the places they expect them to be! But as remotetechs has said, it's pretty much Win7 under the covers anyway.

I'd imagine it's pretty good on a tablet, but for an office machine, shall stick with tried and tested

Thanks for the headsup with "Classic Shell" Steve,#

At last I can logoff without the drama.
