It's all been going on just recently in Google land. They rebuilt their search index last month and renamed the algorithm "Hummingbird".

Apparently the largest algo change since 2001, although personally not seeing much in the way of any differences, either in traffic or keyword searches.

Now we have a re-run of the Penguin link spam algorithm, that is being named 2.1

If you got hit by the last Penguin in May, then hopefully this one will restore your rankings if you fixed any issues.

You get the lowdown from Search Engine World.

Great, more changes, my web site took a hit on the last one, 1st page back down to 14th, I'm not an SEO expert so I really don't fully understand why, especially when other much less relevant pages appear ahead of mine.

Ouch!! The penguin updates are all about your linking structure. If you're getting hit, then it could be your linking profile isn't the best. Cheap outsourced seo generating low quality links tends to be the most common reason

I have made the mistake of employing 3rd party SEO, only to find that they use 'Black hat' techniques, ie using link farms, spamming forums...

Its a long road to recovery from what I can see, so more articles, more content etc. But I'm sure there are good experts out there, just can't trust any yet.

It's a painful and frustrating lesson.

You can get an idea of your linking profile by using things like Open Site Explorer and looking at the quality of some of the sites linking in, and seeing if it all the same anchor text (a common problem). Getting links removed is another headache, so moving forward and building up a natural linking profile with good content is a good start and puts you on the right path.

You can also pay for 3rd party tools such linkdetox (google it) which will tell you exactly what your linking profile looks like and where the problems are.
