Ello - hype or a new force to be reckoned with?

If like me you hadn't heard of ello.co then it looks like you missed the so called hype and viral explosion of the next "big thing" in social media land.

But looking at public information, using high level stats like Alexa, it seems that there is a lot of activity and interest in a site which is currently closed to public membership and very much in beta mode! It's Alexa rank has suddenly rocketed which suggest a lot of viral activity or shrewd marketing.

Ello's home page is very understated and the primary message seems to be a social media network free of advertising, which is fuelling the interest.

See Ello's self description below:

Ello.co website

So an ad free social media network devoid of marketing types and commercialism  Nahhh don't believe a word of it

No doubt time will tell once it formally launches whether the utopian dream continues once the commercial offers and buy outs start landing on the owners desk...

Anyone been invited to join or had any experience of it?

I requested an invite, shall see if I make it through the commercialism cleansing filter...

Well I did get an invite, then in my Social Media ineptitude forgot to do anything with it

But ello is now open to the world.

Signed up to it last night and it does feel like you have stepped back in time, which I'm not sure is a good thing or bad, in this visual age we live in.

It seems to be focused around a 100% non commercial social media interaction and keeping everyones information private, which is admirable and I like, at least from a personal point of view.

Not quite sure how they will make any money out of it though. Standard rhetoric is anti Facebook and anti business. They will need to monetize it in some shape and form unless it's set to become an online hippy commune, so shall continue to watch with interest.

Anyone played with it, think it will be the next big thing, or will it be a damp squid?

Facebook seems to be losing direction IMHO. There is a lot of backlash or at least perceived backlash by users and businesses. Business pages now get a fraction of the exposure they used to on Facebook, forcing them to promote posts, which then clutters up peoples timelines with promotional posts. Then there are attempts at search with the open graph data but it's not really that usable. Are they a wannabe search engine, commercial ad platform or social media?

Seems a good opportunity for Google plus to try and capitalise on the commercial side of social media, whilst maybe giving an opportunity for a completely non advert or commercial service for those users that want an uncluttered interface. Could this be exploited by ello?

It's a fickle world we live in and even giants can tumble. Remember when My Space was the social media darling and everyone had a Nokia phone. Maybe Facebook has peaked?

I agree about Facebook. it is tedious with all the adverts now, constantly seeing boosted posts. You seem to get virtually no exposure without paying.

I haven't seen much about ello and I hate the name..Did you ever use it much? There are too many social media platforms as it is!

ello - did I miss something ;-)

It's all very cockney isn't it?

Please don't say that .. They will just produce yet another site that is virtually impossible to understand ..google plus is bad enough ,in my opinion

To be fair they seem to do that every few months as it is  Can be hard work to keep up with the changes. Will confess to using Google Plus less and less now. A lot of the communities I used have got very spammy, and some of the moderation seems to have gone the other way so you end up getting quality posts blocked.
