The demise of the pub as we know it?

I don't get out much but last week on an early Christmas do went into my local town on a Friday night and it was deserted! What has happened to the pub trade? I was trying to understand if smoking had killed it off or whether more people just party at home. Where have all of the party goers gone?

You didnt state which local Town you were out and about in but i was out last Friday too in Solihull and it was rammed! Bodies everywhere!!!

Havent been out in the pub scene an awful lot lately but it was the new girlfriends daughters 21st and i went along. We crawled in around 2am i think - yep its been confirmed i am too old to party.

The problem with the pub industry is that most pubs were taken over either by the brewerys or by other hospitality corporations, publicans are restricted about what they can buy/sell and from which supplier they use. Some publicans are just scraping a living together and a low one too read the other day that it can be as low as £15k a year. Have a look on Rightmove.com and you can purchase a pub for a couple of hundred quid, sounds good but you'll end up losing thousands within a couple of years, no matter how many happy hours you have... There was also an article the other day about the VAT man and overpayments of VAT on fruit machines in pubs which went to court, VAT man won and now everyone has to pay everything back, send more out of business..

New Years eve big party at a friends house loads of beer and fizzy stuff. No moans about smoking or letting off fireworks :)

What time did you go out? You find these days that the young uns don't start to get into town until around 9.30/10.00pm since pub closing hours ceased as such, and longer opening hours, there's no need to be going out at 8pm these days.
