Business Directories, who do you use and why?

Not heard any mention about wiki style directories such as brownbook and aboutus, they let you create a business page with all your information and links rather than just a basic text listing. You can also invite customers to review you etc.

Good point, there has been a few directories riding the wiki wave.

We've been listed with brownbook and aboutus for a sometime. Just checked the analytics, and since Jan this year, we've had 3 visits from Brownbook and nothing from about us.

But, you never know... if 1 of those clicks produced a sale, then it was worth the 10 minutes it took to list, is another way of looking at it

Out of curiosity, what about your own directory UKBN?

"This free directory from UKBN, has been built solely to increase the SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) for your website."

Or are you looking to reposition this away from the freemium model?

No will leave it there ticking over, as I said, the freebies keep adding to the SEO, and even my advert on there is performing very well, in fact outperforming my main site in a few searches, hence the complete overhaul going on at Kip FX, the SEO of UKBN is done solely by how well somebody writes their advert, I am still shocked at the searches it dominates in, power of WP backend I guess.

My viewpoint has changed. I don't mind paying for directory listing so long as it's a quality directory and it's a reasonable price. Yahoo and friends charge a hell of a lot. To make it worse it's an annual price.

The main reason for us listing is for the link value. That's it.

Yup. We've had consistently good traffic from the UKSBD over the years.

I'm for Freeindex as the best one and some others but cant drop a link yet. I have a web page with a list. Saves people hunting them down individually.

Who??? never heard of them

Nice thread guys.

IMO free directories can not hurt your business so if you have the time to submit to some of them then why not?

If you are using them to generate a load of traffic to your sites then the free versions probably won't do such a great job at this. However, directory submissions can have a massive effect on Google Local Listings (Google places/Maps) if done correctly. We tend to use directory submissions as a way of helping get our clients in the map listings rather than to generate traffic (though any traffic gained from it is most welcome!!).

Here is a small list of free directories which won't hurt submitting to:

Also, try typing into Google the name of the area you are located in and 'Local Directory'. For example, 'Watford Local Directory'. This should help your site a little when people do local searches, for example, 'Watford Plumber'.
