How about bags of letters being found in a posties loft. He had been taking the odd bag home and not delivering it because he was a lazy

He did not steal anything, just left them there. They were found after a problem with his electric meant a leccy went up the loft to look around.

The RM sent out all the letters that were still in a decent condition, some of them were 5 years old.... loads of cheques that were out of date!! and some people got birthday money that was no longer in circulation.

//happened in my home town, I knew the postie
Yes and No i.e. fair.

Take a letter for example: you can send something for a few pence from one end of the country to another in one day. That is not feasible in other business. Yet we (the royal we) moan every time the price is put up. I think the last set of research shows that the RM were losing 4 or 5p on every letter sent.

Parcels; the RM were basically forced to work a certain way for many years and when allowed to start doing things differently the costs were way out of their budgets. That forced them to make major cuts to the workforce. That in turn means it cannot act like UPS and the like.

Now, if they were to completely scale down, cut services that are not making money, such as deliveries to remote locations and second class post etc. and concentrate on one delivery on a 48 hour turnaround, and a separate parcel delivery service they may have a chance to compete.

My old man was a manager at a sorting office for 26 years. He was all but forced to retire almost two years ago at the age of 58. Since then the particular office has lost over half the staff and the posties are no longer allowed to leave the office before a certain time in the morning which means people get their post later in the day (the change was because of complaints about them being too early and making noise. Their biggest complaint is now deliveries being late!! - are we too fickle?).

Perhaps we need to be realistic that the current company is unable to cope with the demands we thrown upon it? but then we have always been a country with high demands :-)

Online Business finally comes of age.... 28th October 2010 11:51 AM
The online marketplace is becoming a strange one. I wonder if people do the same due dilligence buying online as they do walking down the high street?

You need a good website just to fit in, although will we get to the stage where there are so many good websites that the odd dodgy one will actually perform better because it stands out from the crowd?
Acer computers 26th October 2010 8:14 PM
Good man! Find it hard bouncing between the two? When I first got this one had the HP laptop next to me, and couldn't use it within two weeks, I use a lot of keyboard shortcuts though, and find them easier on the mac.

Not doing too badly. The mac is for my mails, invoicing and CRM. The Acer is always on the large monitor for forums and web stuff.

That's a shame. I've had my acer for the past 18 months, never had a problem with it. It came with Vista and I upgraded to Windsows 7 without any hitch.

It looks quite nice sitting next to the Mac
Bad Debt and Serial Debtors 21st October 2010 10:02 PM
In the case of limited companies these shut down and reopen a week later with the same Directors but a slightly different name leaving us with a non trading company to sue. Sometimes when the Bailiffs go in we learn that everything on the premises is leased from another company. One recent leasing company had the same Directors as the company that owed us the money.
If this Government is serious about private business bailing out the economy it needs to bring in laws that protect the honest business people and punishes the dishonest crooks that think nothing of fiddling others for their own greed.
I would appreciate any possible ideas on how to combat this problem before I meet with a member of the government on November 5th.

In the case of the Limited companies; when carrying out credit assessments are you also checking out the directors? This would show all the other companies that they are involved with and the credit ratings of those also and what other companies they have been involved in that have gone out of business. If there are lots of previous companies then ask questions or reject the application and demand a personal guarantee. If they reject, move on and deal with someone else.

You have recourse to report any company directors who you feel have acted inappropriately you can report them to the IP that is acting in the case, they have a duty to investigate. It may seem like the IP is acting in the interests of the directors, but legally they are not, if you feel that they are then report them. You can report Directors to the investigations branch (link on companies house somewhere, have not got it at the mo.).

There is no real way of getting around the problem 100%, never was, never will be and no Government will ever understand that. Any changes need major weight behind it from a lobbying body such as the FSB or ICM.

Personally I can't see how many changes can be made to prevent people from getting credit and then doing a runner etc. If could go against the whole ethos of a limited liability company. The emphasis should be on making the punishment harder and giving more power or resource to the investigations unit, in these days of public sector cuts, I just don't see that happening.
Any other victims of "Slamming"? 19th October 2010 12:15 PM
It would probably be worth having your day in court to defend against the CCJ. They will be hoping you do not and that they can scare you into paying. It might be worth getting your current(or now old) company who new nothing to help out here. Tell them what happened and see if they would be prepared to fight your corner also as a loyal customer who wants to stay with their services.

HERE is a link the court service leaflet telling you what you need to do to defend against a claim.
