And amazingly enough, I got a job today that paid for half of the years sub to yell.com. When I asked how he found me, he said "on the internet" but after I drilled him down, I realised it was from Yell. He even lived in a village that I paid extra to be high up the list for.

I'm a bit more optimistic about Yell now, but it's just one call and I've been on there for 5 weeks now.

Thanks for your input. We're on MS hosting as we did a few ASP things a while back but we don't need it anymore. We're converting back to linux hosting and I'll get my head around the wordpress stuff. From your responses it looks worthwhile to look into just for the speed of being able to knock a site together.

Thanks again.

Thanks fourth-monkey

At least I know that making traditional sites isn't old-school and outdated. I was starting to this that all sites should now be on a CMS and that customers would get annoyed that I've used an out of date method.

I'm going to look into wordpress. I just need my hosting reverting back to Linux from MS. I got it converted to MS a few years ago because we had a site that had a site that used some .NET but we don't have it anymore.

Hi folks.

As part of our business, in addition to the repair services, we are also offering web sites. We've had a couple of customers so far.

The sites we've done are traditional HTML sites designed in Dreamweaver and Fireworks.

I've been reading around and I am seeing a lot of people banging on about Wordpress and I'm just wondering if it's something we need to be up to speed with. If we're not up to speed with it, are we going to be left behind? Will there become a time when anyone that wants a web site designing, will be wanting a wordpress one?

What do you think?

Haha, thanks for all the advice.

I have my mobile site up and running now. It took a while as I found jQuery a bit of a minefield.

Time to start researching PPC.

My plan of action today is sorting out mobile landing pages for each of my services. I know it's something I need to sort out before I even consider PPC.

While I don't enjoy it, my sales skills are good. Maybe when I'm selling my own business rather than someone else's, I may learn to enjoy it.

Thanks Steve. Some nice advice there.

I have flyers designed but not printed. Double sided flyers are just a tad more than single sided, so I'm putting my wife's business on half of the other side (photo repair and restoration) and I'm trying to get someone else to go on the other half, and to pay a portion of the cost.

I'm definitely going down the PPC route, but I need to get my site optimized for it. I'm thinking that a lot of my potential customers may not have internet access on their PC and therefore would pick up their phone to search for someone. My site displays OKish on a smartphone but not brilliant.

I haven't done any door knocking PR, and I agree that I definitely need to. It sucks just waiting for the phone to ring, and when it does, it's telesales. Time to get some business cards and be proactive. Thanks.

Thanks.

I've got my PIN, and now correctly located on Google maps. It's amazing what a Google+ page does for your Google ranking. Wow.

Thanks for the reply thelegalstop. Google are apparently sending me a postcard with a PIN number but I still haven't received it after a week. Is that normal or should I request another one.

I'm just a bit wary of ordering another, in case it changes the PIN and I receive the original one the next day and it's then the wrong PIN.
