“Personally, I think the best ways are link bait, ie good content on your site so people will link to you, and going after some links with good anchor text, as your keywords.
Also depends on the size of your competition, popularity of the keywords etc. If it's a niche market, you could have it cracked in a few months, if its competitive, can take years.... (taken me 4 years to get to page 2 for some keywords
