Gordon Brown has paid a surprise visit to an 82-year-old Labour supporter in her home in Leeds.

On a visit to a health centre, Alice Thompson's GP told the prime minister she had wanted to meet him there but was unable to leave her home nearby.

Accompanied by his wife Sarah, Mr Brown instead strolled up the road and knocked on the front door of her bungalow in Yeadon.

"How wonderful to see you," she said. "I am so proud to meet you."
