How to market a niche service 20th October 2016 2:46 PM

Hi Julia

Great catching up with you the other day

It's an interesting topic as i hadn't even given this a thought from a company point of view.

I/we sometimes have to travel to Edinburgh for the sister company and with the potential of a very long day i usually just accept it as part of the job.

Of course i/we take breaks, eat & drink etc, so hadn't even thought of it of having a "travel policy" as i would have thought common sense would prevail?

We actually drove up last time, shared the driving, took a meal break etc, so would we have to document this to say we had discussed plans etc. What would have happened if we had an accident and none of this was captured?

Anonymity during a Court Case 17th October 2016 11:30 AM

Was reading the news earlier that Sir Cliff Richard has added his weight behind a campaign to give anonymity to those being accused of sexual crimes.

This has now been slammed by a woman's rights group claiming it will do significant harm to the legal system. Err why?

Sexual crime is horrific and i cannot begin to imagine the harm it has on its victims. Once proven guilty in a Court of Law as far as i am concerned, hang the perpetrator by his b***s, cut them off even!

There have been numerous cases of alleged offences levelled at not only high profile "celebs" but "normal everyday people, and their lives have been destroyed by malicious allegations and their good names dragged through the press before their trial. Some have even gone on to kill themselves due to malicious and unfair accusations, even after being found not guilty. This is unfair and unacceptable.

I am 100% in favour of anonymity in all cases, not just sexual crime, where ANYONE is accused of a crime. Let the case go to Court, unreported, once guilt is PROVEN then report away.

Trial by media and the public is not a fair trial, IMHO

Customer refusing to pay?! 17th October 2016 11:02 AM
“.... The reason I lost one was because the judge turned around and said I was not allowed to charge my customers a mark up on the goods I sold.... I'm still trying to get my head around that 15 years later.....

Does that mean i can take Tesco's to Court for doubling (at least) the cost of everything on their shelves

the same goes for lifetime guarantees? I always want to ask 'who's lifetime, mine or the product?' if the latter it just goes to prove that the guarantee is worthless. If the former and the customer was say 20 yrs old they might live for another ninety years, will the company still be around to honour said guarantee?

That's a valid question ! Some are insurance backed so that will be irrespective, assuming of course you can track the insurer down.

Ours are quoted as: - "for as long as the mylocalservices.co.uk website remains online or Lowi Ltd remains in business."

As the OP, glad we've had a friendly debate!

Yes, motor shows are well-known for having scantily clad ladies draping themselves across the cars.  However, at specialist shows you tend to get staff in business dress even if they have come from an agency.  Earlier this year, a temp in London shouted foul because she was asked to dress more appropriately for a reception assignment.  Having seen a picture of how she was dressed, I agreed with the company's stance.  I think recruitment agencies should find out the client's dress code and advise workers accordingly.

Now I've taken the lid off.....

Not sure if this fits the o/p but along the vain of the reception comment, what about tattoos?

Would you employ someone and give them a customer facing role if they were covered in tattoos?

Being honest i am not sure i would want this type of thing on my reception desk.

Friday Funny - get your marmite 14th October 2016 11:52 AM

Love it camp !!!

Idea for a future Poll I think

What i don't understand in this whole debate is that Marmite is a by product of the beer industry, here in the good ol' UK.

Why is a UK produced product subject to price change due to the financial markets? Are we expected to subsidise our soon to be European neighbours product when the price differs in the EU Economy?

Most "volunteers" you are referring to on trade stands are hired help from agencies.

Do you think they care what they wear as long as they take home a wedge of cash at the end of the day?

I get the there is sexism out there and it is wrong but if these woman are prepared to wear precious little whilst lying over the bonnet of the latest Ferrari in a Motorshow, as long as they are not forced to do the job, why do car companies do it then?

Back to the o/p - as i have already said, in the "office" environment you cannot dictate to any employee what they wear, with the exception of uniforms. That opens up a different can of worms!

Seems his path has seen a few bumps lately with woman now coming forward allegedly accusing him of "groping" them.

Its unclear to the validity of these claims but he does seem to be making a few enemies along the way and he does shoot his mouth off.

Not sure I feel safe with his finger potentially on the trigger !
