slow retail 14th November 2013 12:19 PM
I know I'm planning on doing my Christmas shopping online this year. I will shop around in some of the smaller towns around where I've just moved, because they're full of beautiful little privately owned businesses with things you won't find anywhere else, but if it's from a chain store I'll be buying online.

I think some of the quietness is from the recession, and the rest is from more people turning to the internet to fill their Christmas stockings.
Recruiting for focus groups 14th November 2013 10:00 AM
Hi all!

I'm in the market research phase of our course production and I'm looking for interested business-minded to be involved in helping us make some decisions about our branding and presentation of course material.

For those who didn't read my intro post, I'm working with a very experienced entrepreneur to create online courses in all aspects of starting and running a business, from having the right mindset through to the nitty gritty of managing financials and business plans. It's an exciting project for all of us involved so far!

We will soon be ready to run the first of our online focus groups - if you're interested in sharing some valuable insight we'll put you on a special list to be the first to gain access to our free material.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if you're interested in being involved in any way!

Naming a brand/business 14th November 2013 9:08 AM
do you wish people to understand your business based on what you are doing or, does one wish them to know your business supported your name?

I'm not sure I understand the question entirely. Are you asking whether I want to brand the business based on my identity (as I have done with my photography business, using my name as the brand) or create a brand around a new business name?

If that's the question, we want a completely new brand based around the education and services we offer.

Note some business names that come to your mind. Write at least 10 of them and see if you can get them.

Ah, see that's the thing. We've listed far more than 10 names, closer to 30 - with 3 that we thought were The One, and then changed our minds. This naming thing is no piece of cake!
I have an enormous to-do list for online marketing, and of course social media is at the core... but it feels like if I were to do it all it might take over my life!

Does it take a while to start with and then simmer down? Or does it take forever? Or are there a few core things to begin with?

Any tips?
Hi,

My favourite is lynda.com it's really a trusted source, they have a lot of video training, presentation, tutorials. I always use this site if I don't have time to learn from my own experiences. Go ahead, try it

I second Lynda.com. I don't use it myself because I learn best from books and tutorials but I know a few people who swear by it, and I have been doing extensive research into online education sites over the past couple months and Lynda.com is one that stood out for me.

Another one I like is Udemy.com. I haven't taken any of the software courses on here, but there's a lot of quality material available (although make sure you're buying the quality courses, some are a bit second-rate.)
To make our animations we used a company called 'Sparkol'. Pretty cool software that lets you make animated explainer vids and really cheap.

I would also recommend using something like 'Screen-Cast-Omatic- to record your screen if you have an online website that performs a function, or if you want to demo your product or service using powerpoint.

Two great resources for the videos I'm soon to be making, thank you!

I'm working on creating online business courses (I have the creative know-how and am getting the business training from my very experienced boss as we go along). The problem we keep having is that we fall out of love with every name we choose. We've run through three already, and we really need to have something final so we can begin marketing and building our presence as we create course material.

Does anyone have any ideas on naming a business?
Marketing for complete Noobs. 12th November 2013 9:20 AM
Oh fantastic! This is exactly what I needed... both of those are really useful in fact, but I was specifically looking for something on online marketing and this is a step by step break down of what to do!

Thankee most kindly!
Oh ye gods, am I going to be super careful on my way home tonight!!
It makes for hypnotic and terrifying watching!
