Naming a brand/business

I'm working on creating online business courses (I have the creative know-how and am getting the business training from my very experienced boss as we go along). The problem we keep having is that we fall out of love with every name we choose. We've run through three already, and we really need to have something final so we can begin marketing and building our presence as we create course material.

Does anyone have any ideas on naming a business?

Thanks,
Eva

Note some business names that come to your mind. Write at least 10 of them and see if you can get them.

Ah, see that's the thing. We've listed far more than 10 names, closer to 30 - with 3 that we thought were The One, and then changed our minds. This naming thing is no piece of cake!

Thanks,
Eva

How do you want to brand your company? do you wish people to understand your business based on what you are doing or, does one wish them to know your business supported your name? Deciding to complete your business or yourself is a very important first step in making your business name.

I'm not sure I understand the question entirely. Are you asking whether I want to brand the business based on my identity (as I have done with my photography business, using my name as the brand) or create a brand around a new business name?

If that's the question, we want a completely new brand based around the education and services we offer.

It's a great question with no easy answer, and I remember going through the pain of choosing a business name and being surrounded by pieces of paper!

Now I'm older and wiser, personally I'd do things differently. I always think of a name tag you have to wear if you go to an event, or you are a visitor at another company. If someone reads that name tag, can they work out what it is you do?

Success with a business (IMHO) is all about marketing and being obvious. If you have to explain to people what it is you do, then you're making life hard for yourself. (as I often end up doing if I'm at a networking events or trade show).

If I was starting from scratch, and was selling widgets, I'd call myself Steves Widgets. If I was a lawyer, it would be Steves Legal Services, Steves Pasty Company etc. Or XYZ Pasties, XYZ Paper Clip Manufacturing etc. Then I'd base a logo around the text rather than have an irrelevant logo.

We're a careers counselling company working across the UK so Careers Partnership (UK) is a sensible (if boring) name for us...

Very good point. Get a keyword in your business name, always going to help whatever the Google god says this week
