I'm assuming your back from your honeymoon? Congratulations by the way

Yup, 5th spot seems to be our resting place. So basically what your saying is, your dumping us for paying clients...

I dunno dumped during xmas

I actually think having looked at some of the stats for the sites above that it would be possible to move up at least one more spot without very much trouble. However, to get into the top 3 will require a lot more work but again I think it would be possible to reach 3rd spot. But again this would require not only work but time as well. We did quite a bit of initial work so you never know, the site may still rise once we have stopped working on it (which happens quite often).

I hope we can work on this further soon but we really have had lots of work come through so have to prioritise.

I'll continue to keep an eye on it for you though and I hope the forum members found this thread interesting.

Which Search Engine Do you Recommend? 28th December 2010 9:38 AM
I'm still not all that sure what it is you want to know. in you original post you said "Which Search Engine among Google, Ask, Bing, Altavista etc do you recommend me to check for my site ranking?"

If you are ranked number 2 in Google you are ranked number 2 in Google. If you are ranked number 2 in yahoo you are ranked number 2 in yahoo.

Obviously the data you get that says how many searches you get for each keyword each month may not be all that accurate if that is what you are worried about.

Yeah guys, I also know that Google is best among all, and surely, I'll go for that, but one thing that bothers me about it is its utilization of other's data, which it did in recent past.

Can you explain what you mean in a bit more detail. I'm not quite sure what you mean.

Quick update:

Without any more work being carried out the site has jumped back up to 5th spot.

5th spot is probably where about it going to stay.

Google gets the majority of the search engine traffic so I would always suggest you start with them.

You have to understand SEO - and then you may realise!
95% sure way to get a higher ranking is to have more inbound links to your own website using your chosen keyword. As you can see, the original poster has infact , by starting this article/page, created a page about SEO on another company website, not his own - that links to his website using the keyword "" in his signature.

The more inbound links you have increases the "importance" of your site. If a lot of people link to it - it must be important right?
So your ranking increases....

But what's the point of targetting a keyword as rightly mentioned abut green elephants if no one actually searches for it.

BUT and this is a BIG but....
What's the point in targetting SEO or Cheap SEO
(see i'm making this page more relevant to SEO now (he'll love me for this)
and of course - i'm wating my time doing the hard work for him... grr

...anyway - i digress - the BUT
so yes whats the point.
The point is - there isnt a point.
Picture this.

You're a sole trader and you want to set up your own bank.
Ridiculous right.
Too much competition and no one would take you seriously.
Searching UK Bank on google brings you a lot of results....
So why would you try to compete against the best.
It's simply a TOTAL waste of time.
and remember, just as you increase your pagerank by doing SEO, the top #1 position is probably moving the goalposts by equally STILL doing SEO.

So my point is...
SEO is POINTLESS
UNLESS
You research your keywords first.

Based on the following fake information - what keyword would you try to target to get you to the top of listings...

Bank - 1'000'000'000 websites / 400'000 daily searches
UK Bank - 300'000 / 300'000 daily searches
Best UK Bank - 216'000 / 400'000 searches
Free UK Banking - 50'000 / 60'000 searches

Targetting bank - you have to beat 1 billion other websites to get to the top!
but what about the rest?
What word would be more achievable and profitable?

SO point 1.- the fact you dont understand why this comment was originally posted - it's all to do with SEO and link building. (unless he's a saint)

point 2 - vague keywords are the best. Some are niche words meaning low competition but high searches. Dont fight above your weight!

point 3 - Reasearch - For roughly

Hi Guys (Happy Christmas).

Just a quick update.

We have not done any work on the site now for a few weeks. There have been a few reasons for this.

1 - We wanted to see how the keyword for this site would hold up if SEO was reduced or stopped. The verdict is that it started to fall.

2 - We have had a load of work come through which has been taking up all of our time

3 - I have been on my honeymoon for the last 10 days and the wife would not forgive me if I looked at a computer let alone did any work.

The site has not held up all that well without any work being carried out on it. It has fallen down to about 8th place on the 1st page from a position of 5th. However, I don't think it would take all that much effort to get it back up to 5th.

At the moment we really don't have all that much time to dedicate to this challenge as we have had a load of big projects come through which we have been dedicating our time too.

If we get a spare moment we will do a bit more but the main aim of this challenge was to get the site on the 1st page for the selected keyword, which we did in about 10 days (I think).

I think 3rd or 4th spot is achievable in the long run but I think it would have taken a lot lot longer to get the number 1 spot (6 month+).

I think we have shown we are able to get a site to a good position for a particular keyword on the 1st page without much effort.

If we can spare more time on this challenge in the coming weeks we will but I'm not sure how much we will be able to spare.

Enjoy the rest of your Christmas and all the best for 2011!

SEO Companies - Your Experiences 14th December 2010 10:23 AM
Hi Guys,

I was hoping to get some idea on your experiences with SEO companies (good and bad) you have dealt with (either contacted to enquire or had working for you). There is no need to name the companies, just looking for experiences that you might like to share.

Common complaints about SEO companies:

Pricing - Costs too much
Contract Length - Long tie in like 12 months
Results - Failure to get website to agreed spot
Communication - Failure to explain realistic outcomes

Hopefully we can get a good thread going which might help others.

Keywords in URLs - any best practices? 10th December 2010 9:50 AM
Hi Steve,

I would advise not using hyphens and just having the URL as one long word.

steveswonderfulwidgets.com

Doesn't look pretty to look at but is very effective for SEO (especially if they are the keywords toy want to rank for).
