Is there an argument that you should include some reciprocal links to at least give the illusion of natural link building? Or is that an old wives tale?

I really don't know to be honest. Does reciprocal links happen with natural link building? For example, if you had links to 50 sites on your website and they happened to be linking back to you, does this happening naturally? Does it look natural in the eyes of Google? I don't know. To me it doesn't seem natural.

What I would say though is that having a mish mash of all different types of links (including reciprocal) will be more beneficial than just sticking to one form of linking and thinking it will help. But I know you already know this!
I tend not to bother with reciprocal links. Do they work? Probably, but God (or Google) really knows how much.

There are much more powerful ways to boost your sites ranking other than reciprocal linking.

This is not to say that it does not work. I just don't bother with it.

I always go for a wide link portfolio regardless of value, it just looks more natural. This includes directory subs, blog comments, high PC contextual links etc. If you are into Google Places optimisation directories are a most..

This would be my advice as well. It is important to mix things up.
Good advice Steve.

I would suggest downloading a program called ccleaner CCleaner - Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

I run this every time I am doing a search. Fantastic program.

I haven't read the article but I would also suggest not only clearing cookies but making sure you are logged out of any Google account when doing a search.

Press Releases is a very good way of linking building and helps increase your rankings (obviously if keywords and anchor text are used properly)

Yes, I probably wasn't very clear in my post. Google will follow these links but its correct that they dont pass as much "juice" in terms of PR. I would still rather a nofollow link from an authority site in my niche than a dofollow from an unrelated site. I have done my own tests and have been able to index a new site purely from nofollow blog comments within a few days without pinging, webmaster tools etc.

I would tend to agree with this.

When creating links for your sites I would advise making sure you have a good helping of nofollow links in there as well. It looks a lot more natural and as IT Consultant London has said, it will not hurt to have them.

I have to say that you were on to a loser from the start with this one, the single most important factor in SEO is the domain name, it pays to choose a domain with SEO in mind. The website you were trying to get to #1 is missing 'uk' and 'business' in the url. To compound the issue, there is already a site at number one that has all of you chosen keywords in it's domain name.

So, keep trying but you'll have a tough job.

I have a work-a-round solution, which I don't think I'll share with you - but I'll have a tinker and if I am number one for the keyphrase "UK business forum" then you can buy me a drink.

I don't think they were on to a loser from the start to be honest. There are many examples where sites with the keywords in the title are out ranked by sites that do not contain any of the keywords.

Also, if you add in the fact that this site and many sites/businesses want to rank for multiple keywords then it is is impossible to have all the keywords you want to rank for in the title. If all you sell is '6 inch coffin nails' and that is all you are interested in ranking for then it would be worth having that as your domain name (though again it is not the be all and end all).

Ranking number 1 for the keywords we looked at was always going to be hard but the point was to show what can be achieved.

It's a good idea - a lot of work though for potentially no sale.
Also - how would you deal with selling a site ranked number one on Tuesday only to get a call from a customer on Friday saying their site has now dropped to position 89.

We supply discounts for the number of days the site is not on the 1st page (never had this problem though).

With regards it being a lot of work to get the sites ranked with potentially no sale, it really is not a lot of work for the keywords we choose to rank them for (and i don't mean just any old two bob keyword). If the client then wants the site to rank for another keyword then they have to be realistic in the amount of time it takes.
