I've done both in my various incarnations and I much prefer to work from an office.

I'm not sure if it puts potential clients off when they know you work from home but it has never bothered me. The first architect I employed had his office in his attic. It was accessed by a ladder and I kept hitting my head on the cross beams. But he was a great architect.

My preference is based on my own inability to feel like I'm actually at work unless I'm actually AT work. Similarly I wear a suit and tie, not because it is expected quite so much these days, but because it is my working clothes and I have trouble getting into work mode if I wear jeans and a t shirt.
Is this the end for Kodak? 4th February 2012 12:11 AM
I can't believe they will be gone.

Like other posters here they provided my very first camera and were a name to be trusted.

What amazes me the most is that their decline has been so slow. I can understand a business that struggles because of short term changes in the marketplace, but surely someone at Kodak must have noticed they were leaking market share over the past 15 years!!!!
Facebook to float for 3rd February 2012 11:55 PM
I love the facebook story.

A young guy who has a great idea and acts on it in a weekend to create a hugely successful business.

Fantastic. I wish I'd thought of it.
Paranoid- Black Sabbath. And I still have it today.
I went with number 1 as well and as I hadn't read the posts beforehand I was pleasantly surprised to see that I'm not in the minority.

I've noticed that customers are more careful about how they spend their money, but it's still out there if you're willing to adapt to the conditions.
Cars. My favourite discussion. I love the MG and always have but I've only owned a midget. I moved on to an MX5 because my wife wouldn't drive the mG. She couldn't get used to the old steering or braking system. The 5 was the closest modern vehicle that I could find to an old English sports car.

That's gone as well now though and I have an old MR2. I like the fact that it only has 2 seats. It gives me an excuse to leave the kids behind.
I would say my wife as without her I probably wouldn't be here today, but obviously I didn't buy her. So I'd have to say my laptop. How else would I work while I'm on holiday.
Riots 11th August 2011 11:22 PM
Although there is no doubt that the youth of today are emerging into the worst economy for decades and some areas, especially in the inner city, are seriously depressed, I'm afraid that I can't find it within myself to accept that as an excuse for what's going on.

I grew up in Nisbet House in Hackney and my parents had no spare money at all. I had a normal comprehensive school education and left with some O levels. I've never taken part in a riot, trashed a shop, sold drugs or murdered anyone, but I grew up with those that did.

At 22 I got married and started my first business. At 27 I bought a hotel in Scotland (that was in 1989, just before the last recession) and at age 33 I lost the lot.

I still didn't go out on the streets and riot.

4 years ago I started a property business and the government gave us another recession, which seems to have put paid to that as well. Did I go out and trash my local town? No. I started another business in a different field.

The riots have nothing to do with the economy, the university charges or whether these toe rags had toys as a kid. It has to do with wanting something for nothing and seeing an opportunity to get it. One of the guys arrested for looting I saw on TV today is a teaching assistant. That hardly fits the profile the bleeding hearts are whining about.

Unfortunately people want everything now and they don't want to work for it, and while the police are seen on TV standing by and watching while businesses are robbed, then they will sieze the opportunity to upgrade their i-phone while it's available.

It's time we stopped worrying about 'inflaming the situation' and started using the same tactics they used to clean up New York. Zero tolerance is the only answer to thugs and I'd use the army to back up the police and get the job done.

I would also make it impossible to sue the police or army personnel brought in to arrest the rioters and a minimum
