Apparently we are on the cusp of a revolution in the way we read books, or at least according to a new joint project between Microsoft and US book seller Barnes and Noble.

"The Nook e-reader was launched in 2009 to compete with Amazon's Kindle, allowing users to buy, download and read digital versions of books and magazines.

Its content will now be available to the growing number of people with mobile devices running Microsoft software."

I suspect this may be an age thing. I can't imagine reading a book on a tablet or reader, but no doubt youngsters can't imagine having to pick up an old fashioned book

Or are you a Kindle or digital book convert?

I got a kindle a month ago and it has changed my life - I now read every day on the tube and am reading a far more varied selection than I would have ever considered before - Love my kindle!

From a business point of view - the readers seem to be a clever way of tying down buyers -

e.g kindle owners with amazon
Nook owners with Barnes and Noble etc.

Interesting feedback, but still confused. You could have taken a book on the tube, and you can only read one book at a time, or do you have magazine type things on there?

I think its partly the novelty factor that means I am reading more but also the kindle is so much lighter than carrying around a big paper back - I have some newspapers on there - for me personally its ideal - I wasn't a big reader before, I wouldn't have taken the time to go into waterstones and peruse the shelves etc and the kindle has reintroduced me to the pleasure of reading! (I'm not an amazon salesman - I just sound like one!)

Microsoft, whilst extremely profitable, successful, influential etc is still a real enigma at times. They've been investing heavily in R&D and buying/starting products and services yet appear always to be late to market. Ebooks is just another example.

Hm, does anybody know what happened with this?

It looks like it's gone very competitive since they dropped the price. Can't argue for
