Now's bad but however gloomy 2011 is, it doesn't feel like a rerun of 2008. I feared meltdown then.

Thanks mrb, as and when I receive both items will be back on the forum with details. Currently everything's still in probate - there's a legal problem so the delay could be a lengthy one!

Thanks sjr4x4. Dunno whether I properly understood what the donor said about the computer - but that's what I think she said.

As I'm now in techieville, can the anoraks plse tell me whether it would be worth trying to sell the second much older Apple computer or its bits (bytes included!)? I'd hate to throw it out and then realise it had a value for somebody.

I'm expecting to inherit an Apple with Windows loaded (Vista????). Will I be able to use it as an ordinary PC, plse?
Student faces extradition 22nd June 2011 7:55 PM
Reporters don't always allow the truth to get in the way of a good story -if the facts about this student and his behaviour are as given, though, it's difficult to see how our police could justify putting him in handcuffs or making him spend the night in prison.

I was told by a police officer going for promotion that police law enforcement behaviour has to be "proportionate" - if it isn't, the police officers concerned may be infringing Human Rights legislation. Perhaps this student could take up the issue with any friends studying law!
UK Hosting companies..... 20th June 2011 10:33 AM
I'm after shared (from a zillion providers). Now I've a better understanding of the question I've asked, I can see why it's almost impossible to answer it!
UK Hosting companies..... 19th June 2011 7:09 PM
Again off the main topic but it's a pressing current issue for us ...

Any advice plse from anywhere on what would be a "reasonable" price (excluding VAT) to pay for web hosting?

I don't like the cloud concept and our web host could expect to be asked the odd daft question (eg we've got a pingback notification on the site, should I approve it?). We've a small wordpress site (c.51 pages, 5 email addresses). Naturally, we want close to total reliability and a contactable human being in case of problems.

Hoping to hear from you ......
What would entice you to buy 17th June 2011 5:36 PM
Assuming prospective customers have made the first contact by email or 'phone, what works best for me is trying to find out more about the customers' needs and perceptions of their issues, then suggesting how these problems might best be solved. It's a collaborative process between us and by the end of it, the customer and I know quite a bit about each other's style of working.

If the prospective customers like the analysis and the suggested way forward, then they either book or ask for further information (I send case studies) along with my formal email offer to them.

I deliberately avoid making a sales pitch as such (that's only partly because I'm rotten sales person!) and I never put any callers under any pressure to sign up (it's counter-productive).
Forum Posting is Still Effective 17th June 2011 5:04 PM
You can see the value of contributions to different fora in your site stats. I post quite often in 2 national and 1 regional "newspapers" and on a variety of careers, employment, HR and "special interest" sites. The site stats usually show small upward blips on the day of posting.

Sometimes you also get useful ideas for your own blog from reading others' contributions. It's a real slog writing my blog and anything which lessens the pain is welcome.
How to enter the UK market 7th June 2011 11:11 PM
Hi George

Suggest you contact the following for starters:-

The British Embassy - they've a wealth of information on the UK, its markets, existing suppliers, trading legislation etc. Explain what you want to do, then ask whether they've got any information and advice that would help you do it. Most - if not all - their expert advice, information and marketing data will be provided at no charge.

The Anglo - Greek Chamber of Commerce (it might have a different name). Bilateral Chambers of Commerce facilitate trading between the relevant two countries (eg Russia and UK, Spain and UK, etc).

Contact the Anglo-Greek Chamber, ask their advice and consider joining the Chamber if it seems sufficiently useful and lively.

Good luck!
