It's frustrating, the computer is just a tool, just like the car is a tool to get to and from work.

But if I buy a new car, it doesn't take long to get used to it. But a new computer with a new version of windows can be a nightmare. Because its not just the new windows, no doubt it will mean a new office package, and all the common functionality has been moved around again "to make my life easier!!!!". The email client will probarbly be new as well, and everything I used to do so easily, has now to be relearnt because this new way will save me so much time!!

Still only finding my way round Vista

BBC NEWS | Americas | US balloon boy case 'not a hoax'

A Colorado sheriff has said there is no indication that the family of a boy thought to have been carried away by a helium balloon was carrying out a hoax.

The disappearance of Falcon Heene, six, became a media drama that gripped the nation. He was later found at home.

Suspicions were aroused when the child, when asked on TV why he had stayed hidden, said "we did this for a show".

....He and his wife Mayumi have previously appeared on the reality TV show Wife Swap, leading to speculation in the media that the latest incident might have been a publicity stunt.

US news networks devoted hours of live coverage to the drama on Thursday after it was reported the boy might be in a balloon floating high over Colorado....

So is this just a great form of PR, with countless TV Airtime? Ok so the aim would be for personal publicity, but its fascinating how different PR stunts can be incredibly successful for business, and at minimal cost!

I like the idea that you buy certain goods, and a surcharge goes towards sustainability, I dunno, like you buy a car, and "x" number of trees are planted to offset the carbon emmissions that are generated producing your new pride and joy.

I know some airlines do this now as well, you pay for your flight which includes some kind of eco offset. Suppose its down to trust, I have to trust that 200 trees will be planted, but the idea is good.

Was reading a car mag today, and there was an article on some big German Autoshow, where most car manafacturers have turned up with electric or hybrid models. So if nothing else, the economic downturn has made the big boys rethink, as consumers want cheaper more economical alternatives. Even BMW is doing a 4x4 hybrid eco friendly model.

Business School Gets Crowded 8th October 2009 10:41 PM
Yields are up at full-time MBA programs, and B-schools are enrolling larger-than-ever classes. But not everyone is sharing in the bounty.

MBA programs were braced for the worst this fall. A damaged brand, a shortage of jobs, and questions about return on investment all threatened to send admitted students away from business school and into the relative stability of the workforce. Predicting final enrollment this year, says Beth Flye, assistant dean and director of admissions for Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management was "like trying to land a 747 on a Sunfish sailboat."

But to the relief of many an admissions officer, fears of mass student defection were never realized. Far from it. Flying in the face of many predictions, 2009 enrollment actually soared at top schools. Students accepted their offers of admission in unprecedented numbers, leading many programs to enroll more MBAs than ever in this year's entering classes.

The reasons for the higher-than-expected yields are unclear. The economic forces that boosted enrollments in recent years have clearly not abated, and many applicants may have decided to wait out a jobless recovery in B-school. The fact that top schools saw the biggest gains suggests that prospective students may be opting for B-schools they believe will provide the best ROI in a tough economy.

Among the top schools reaching all-time highs were Kellogg, at 526 from 485 last year; the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business at 500 from 433; Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, at 447 from 434; INSEAD at 990 from 900; and the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School at 862 from 823. Harvard Business School also brought in its largest class in recent memory, 937 students, up from last year's 900.

I know a lot of people now separate facebook accounts and have one for work and one for personal use. I suppose its the worry of overspill from work and personal life, or displaying to many personal details to people you don't really know.

Like steve, I'm not convinced ref the business use, but watching steves efforts with interest
Networking events 25th September 2009 2:36 PM
Do you utilise face to face networking groups? In the UK we have business breakfast groups and networking clubs.

Some are more popular than others, and some have pretty strict rules, such as you must attend so many sessions or you can lose your membership. Costs also vary from a $15 pay when you go to $500 annual fees.

So are face to face networking groups popular in the states, or what is peoples experience?
