In short - yes & yes.

Although in balance, in our example, 5 of the 14 Governors are either teachers, or assistants within the school, so its unlikely that they would vote in favour of something they didn't like, however in most cases the proposals are usually in the schools best interests.

Interesting point though, the Governors appoint the new Head with a LEA official on hand, but the Head is on the panel that appoints any other member of staff.

This got me a little flustered this morning "School governors: Call to recruit more widely" BBC News

Think i have said on a few occasions i'm a Governor at a local school that both my boys went to, youngest left nearly 4 years ago, yet still i remain vice chair. My remit was and still is to be a critical friend to the school and assist the head in managing the school and ensure the safety of the pupils.

Have to be honest, during my first 3 years or so i took little interest in the meetings due to the fact they were so damn long & boring, often over 2 1/2 hours, that was after a full working day at the office. Then a new Chair took over and between us we re-vamped the way meetings were held and now a 90 minute meeting is a long one, but still this is voluntary.

I receive no pay, no expenses and recently got abuse from the staff because they didn't like my management style of the way i handled the last fire drill.

There are also daytime meetings to run individual smaller committees that report back to the main panel, i cant attend these due to work. I am Health & Safety Governor, but have to do this at 7.30am, so i can be in the office at 9am. I have repeatedly asked for the other sub committee meetings to be held outside of school hours to be told that teachers don't have to report back outside of school hours, yet i am required to take time out of my day for NO PAY!

I have also attended Governor Training sessions, again in my own time, with no pay, not even travelling expenses.

If Mr Gove wants more high calibre & more diverse Governors then he is going to have to at least pay for expenses, Governor training and for my time to be there. Teachers are paid to be at the school, even the clerk to the Governors is paid for her time, i'm not!

What did you call your teachers? 14th May 2014 3:01 PM

Just reading this article on the BBC news - what a load of rubbish!

BBC news - Calling teachers Sir and Miss 'depressing and sexist'

Seems we have an feminist doing her worst, stating that calling a male teacher "sir" is fine but a female teacher "miss" isnt, because and wait for it .... its not on the same level as a knight, presume she wants them to be addressed as Dames?

Have to be honest, never really gave it a thought when i was a kid, just was told to call the teachers sir or miss, well to their faces anyway - i never looked at it from a degrading point of view, and i certainly dont think its sexist.

Some people have far too much time on their hands!!!!

Just opened an email myself, had a subject line of -

Quick chat soon Clive?

Opened it thinking, it must be an old contact only to be met with -

"I hope all is well. I'm trying to contact the person who handles online marketing for ..."

What a shame, thought i was meeting up with an old friend for a beer at least!

But just proves the point above, i opened the email, read some of its content, mission accomplished for the sender, well it was until i hit the delete button

Sunday Times Rich List 2014 14th May 2014 1:25 PM
“... Also, I have seen my previous generations spend all their life trying to accumulate wealth for the sake of it - without really enjoying.

With you on this Ryan.

My father worked until he was 52, then he took early retirement due to ill health. He still didnt spend his savings until he eventually bought a 2nd home in Wales to use as a family holiday home - he bought the place in October 2007, got diagnosed with a brain tumour in December 2008 and died in the February aged 67, never having stepped foot in the house in Wales....

Live for the now, money in the Bank is great, but you can't take it with you!

I'm ok i have the A6

But as part of my deal i asked the salesman to take my son for a spin in the R8

Thats him grinning like a cheshire cat - fortunately he came back in one piece!l

Im not a prude, but actually dont have any ink on my body, but have wanted one for 25+ years - 2 things stop me 1) i have no idea what to have 2) i hate needles & pain!

Well i've seen another thing that just make you ask the question - Why?

Tattoo Make up for brides.

Personally i dont like tattoos on woman, but i have no issues with dating someone with a nice discreet "symbol" about her person. The ones i dont really like are the big ones on shoulders or writing up & around arms etc, but it seems that on your wedding day the bride suddenly feels conscious about said obtrusive inking.

So you can now buy tattoo covering make-up to cover the monstrosity that you thought was cool when you where p****d and out with a group of friends.

Wonder how many "tats" are done due to peer pressure rather than ones own choice, and if as high as i suspect, well ive just answered my own question!

Becoming a Non Smoker 14th May 2014 9:48 AM
Oh yes, very unsocial smelly smokers...the cost of tobbaco is also approaching similar cost to drugs like heroin, in other words it costs about the same to smoke as it does to use a bag of heroin per day. Both equally anti-social...

Wouldnt know about the cost of drugs

Spoken like a true ex smoker though

I think finally people are standing up for their Rights more and businesses are taking note.

Even my Bank recently bent over backwards to help when i stupidly left my debit card at home, letting me move money around my accounts with just my ID. Thats how it should be, but by doing their job properly you are compelled to feel warm & fuzzy

Find myself complaining far less lately, maybe thats because i dont go to Tescos ....

Thats a fair point Ray, but at least he has stayed in the UK, unlike others who live in tax havens and duck paying any Tax what so ever, just duck in & out the UK to suit.

Still believe he has been badly advised by his management, who coincidentally have also been caught up in this!
