The future of advertising... 1st November 2012 7:02 AM
Infact, the modern way of marketing lets you choose your customers i.e. who you are going to advertise to.

That's been marketing since time immemorial, I think. Its always been about making a product or service and then selling it to the target market found in research. People they know will need and use that product. if a few others that aren't related to their target market find the product, then so be it, but they can build on their target market and create a presence so that even though these non related visitors aren't part of their target market, they might just buy something regardless, or "realize" that they need your product.

That's all it is really, influencing people, getting them to think you are a well trusted and cornerstone of business sectors, and people trust you a whole lot more. Even online. Someone offering SEO products and services from somewhere like SEOmoz is more likely to be trusted than someone that works on, say, fiverr. There's nothing new about it, its just the technology and playground that's changed.
Becoming a Non Smoker 1st November 2012 5:27 AM
My dad passed away about 3 years ago. He didn't have lung cancer, but emphysema instead. I didn't smoke as much as that, at any given time, but my dad did ( he loved his Rothman's 30's), and took pride that after 40 years, the doctors found no trace that he was a smoker.... Not too long after that though he was diagnosed. My dad was young, He would have been 75 this year. IT was harder for him to quit when he was sick as well. Docs kept saying the next one could be his last, but try as he might he couldn't stop. lol and he had the willpower and stubborness of an ox, so I just hope I can succeed where he failed.

I've lost count to be honest. I'm still visibly shocked with what I saw, so its sunk in now, and I don't want my girls seeing that one day.

I will.

How about cold turkey ? I spent a few minutes on youtube, strangely enough looking at short doccies about the carpenters, and somehow ended up watching a video a lady made of her dad. I think that was the clincher for me. Today 12:02 is my last day as a smoker. methinks its time for me to put the effort in and stop now.
That's sad though. I'm not one to talk though, I love being able to read a book on my iPhone, but sometimes nothing beats sitting down with a real book and actually having to turn the pages. There's nothing like the smell and feel of either a new book or an old worn out one.

I think you mentioned on another thread about using an accountant's site for their free tools, I think this could be a good way to advertise, in a way. Instead of having the advertising in your face the whole time, offer suggestions or some such. There are a lot of genuinely curious people out there, and if someone tells me that they have something that can help me, and I know they have a good web rep because I am using one of their free products, I would be more inclined to go take a look and give them the benefit of the doubt, so to speak. I guess subscription services could work the same way, but what I've noticed, is that without some sort of web presence, or reputation, you have to work a lot harder to generate anything, let alone a conversion or two. (IMHO of course )
Holy Smokes that's a lot of money. Geez.
