Happy 20th Birthday Google 28th September 2018 8:51 AM
I feel like we're all slaves to Google somewhat and that makes me uncomfortable ... ”

Aha, you're one of them! Google is turning into Skynet

With their development in Artificial Intelligence, there are a lot of people getting nervous....

I'm a total iPhone fan, but refuse to be a consumer slave. I'm dug in with my iphone 6S, I love it, does all I need it to and still has a headphone jack! I've even got a boxed unused 6S in the office to replace my current one, so I've got about another 5 or 6 years at least of my trusty iphone 6S

Until Apple declares me obsolete, which by then both me and the phone will be

Can you believe it's been 20 years? I remember setting default home pages to Google in 1999 as an IT contractor as it used to wind up the accounts department who all preferred AltaVista.

I think for me personally I'd describe it as a love hate relationship over the years

GDPR - 4 months on - world still spinning? 26th September 2018 10:28 AM

Anyone still breaking into a sweat when you mention GDPR?

Or are you as nonplussed now as you were before May when GDPR came into effect?

Now if you have no idea what GDPR is, then you have been living under a rock, but thelegalstop did a comprehensive guide so i shall say no more!

From our side, we had to make some considerable (and expensive) changes, primarily to the way were capturing data as in fairness a full audit highlighted we were capturing too much info. Then our mail server and newsletter lists needed some work doing meaning we scrapped around 70,000 historical email addresses and stopped auto opting in people to our mail lists.  To be honest it was a useful if disruptive exercise, making us more efficient, but GDPR in general has gone very quiet.

I was expecting some high profile warnings or prosecutions from the ICO to keep everyone on their toes. But from what I can see GDPR seems to have disappeared from the national consciousness in the same way as the cookie law.

After a recent booking with Premier Inn (July 2018), the final part of the process caught my eye:

Isn't that an auto opt in? (ie you miss it and forget to tick the box)

So if Premier Inn aren't bothered, I wonder how many other organisations aren't bothered?

Did GDPR impact your business? Did you spend time and resources making yourselves compliant, or were you already squeaky clean?

Any thoughts or have you spotted any big organisations skirting round the rules?

Facebook is a lot older than I thought! 21st September 2018 3:35 PM

Noticed this when I my mouse hovered over the MLS business page link. Shows exactly the same for other pages we manage so obviously a site wide bug. Made me smile, in nerdy end of the week way...

Beyond 100 days - comedy gold 18th September 2018 11:57 AM

Must admit, beyond 100 days and the news in the morning is about the only telly I watch. After that it's iplayer and Amazon.

Beyond 100 days - comedy gold 14th September 2018 4:19 PM

I'm a fan of the BBC's Beyond 100 days news 24 program by Katty Kay and Christian Fraser. It started life as 100 days, tracking the first 100 days of Mr Trump, but has continued. Mainly I suppose due to the endless material from the Trump twitter feed.

It is supposed to be a serious news analysis program but it's worth watching just for Christian Fraser's bizarre adlibs and one liners. My favourite this week was him explaining about how quiet some Trump supporters had been, which Christian referred to as "silent Trumpers".

You could see the tears in the eyes of the Katty Kay as the camera panned to her. Comedy gold

Still these scams continue to fester

Although this scam is now donkey years old, with the volume of new business owners setting up shop, this scam remains profitable and will no doubt remain so

Joke of the Day 6th September 2018 3:34 PM

Speaking of parrots...

Potty-mouthed parrot stuck on roof in Edmonton

A parrot stuck on a roof for three days had choice words to say to firefighters who came to its aid this morning.

Jessie the Macaw parrot had escaped its home in Cuckoo Hall Lane, Edmonton and spent three days sitting on a neighbours roof. With Jessie’s owner and the RSPCA unsuccessful in their attempts to lure the parrot down, the Brigade was called.

Watch Manager Chris Swallow, who was at the scene, said: “Jessie had been on the same roof for three days and there were concerns that she may be injured which is why she hadn’t come down".

“Our crew manager was the willing volunteer who went up the ladder to try and bring Jessie down. We were told that to bond with the parrot, you have to tell her ‘I love you’, which is exactly what the crew manager did".

“While Jessie responded ‘I love you’ back, we then discovered that she had a bit of a foul mouth and kept swearing, much to our amusement. Jessie also speaks Turkish and Greek, so we tried telling her to ‘come’ in both those languages too".

“Thankfully it soon became apparent that Jessie was fine and uninjured as she flew off to another roof and then to a tree".
