M&S morphing into a supermarket?

Interesting news this morning about ailing high street brand M&S. After been slated recently for fuddy duddy fashions, and losing money overseas, the new plan is to concentrate on grub. With 60 clothing stores going, and a whole host of new simply food ones springing up, it does seem like M&S want to take on the big 4 supermarkets.

But with discounters like Aldi and Liddell, it seems a risky plan in an already busy food market, to go against the trend of price cuts, as M&S is seen as a luxury food brand. I wonder if Waitrose and M&S will be battling for the same customers while the discounters grow in market share?

With the likes of C&A and now BHS consigned to history, if M&S moves away from clothing the High Street will certainly start looking a bit bare when it comes to clothes for those over a certain age

It's interesting that they haven't yet confirmed which UK stores will close or be turned over to food only.  They've only declared their hand with the overseas stores.  Will be surprised if my local town centre one survives as there's a massive out-of-town one about 8 miles away where parking is free. There's also a local food only store next to a Tesco Extra and another almost completed as part of an area regeneration. M&S made big mistake in trying to cater to younger generation who hardly ever buy clothes there.  My mother (81) and I often refer to the Classic range as "old ladies' department".  What's left in between, very little now that they've resorted to cheap overseas manufacture and out of touch designers.  Understand that menswear is also suffering from poor quality.  The High Street will look bare as no-one has yet had the imagination to give us what we want, only what they think we want.

Not sure if they want to take on Aldi and Lidl.  In my personal experience, Aldi and Lidl have good quality fruit and veg, but I'm still not confident enough with the other products to switch.  I've always viewed M&S and Waitrose as the luxury end of the food market; at least M&S has now started to offer reductions and price matches.

Back to M&S versus Waitrose.  With the recent announcement that BA would be selling M&S sandwiches on their short-haul flights, the view is that they have teamed with another failing brand.  Apparently Waitrose passed on this "opportunity".
