Sobering festive news

Nearly half small businesses expect Christmas to be difficult, according to a survey released by insurer Aviva on Friday.

One in 10 fear firms fear Christmas will be "make or break" for their business, with three out of five small business owners expecting conditions to "remain difficult" in 2011.

Thirty percent of small business believe there is a "real risk" of a double dip recession, with 11 percent saying that without a change in business conditions, they will cease trading.

"Christmas is a crucial trading period, even more so with the VAT rise and government austerity measures hanging over consumer spending for the year ahead," said David Bruce, commercial product manager at Aviva, which surveyed 500 firms.

"The UK's small businesses are a resilient community but it looks as though the coming months will test them to the limit."

It's a bad state of affairs at the mo!
I know from being a service provider to the SME business market that money is very very tight across all business sectors.

My daughter brought a letter home form school yesterday to let us parents know that the uniform providers have ceased trading. They have gone into receivership due tot he current economic climate. They had been trading for 18 years and had contracts with the majority of schools in Sheffield and most probably other major cities too!

I was very surprised.......just goes to show!

Blimey! So you have a pretty much guaranteed market, and contracts in place, and yet the business folds.

I guess its the like of Asda George pushing down prices with cheap imports? No doubt your local supermarket will step into the breach with cheap blazers...
