The People's Supermarket

But if you are paying less for a bendy cucumber and mis-shaped tomatoes then you are not competing on price, you are simply offeirng a different quality. Yes, they taste the same and it wouldnt bother me on its appearance, as long as the produce was fresh and lasted just as long.

However competing on price can only be assumed if it is selling the exact same thing. This isn't. Netto already sell fruit and veg cheaper than Tesco's. They also sell cheap tinned foods that is either branded or unbranded. Has that taken over? No. It never will either. The majotity (not everyone) want a nice shopping experience generally. ie decent till service, decent staff and customer service, everything organised and sticked up, etc and so on. Most people want this. The minority want the people's supermarket experience.

Although from what I've read, some of the principles are admirable, and do agree in better prices for local produce etc, reality is, we can all vote with our feet and wallets.......

......I think I much prefer a world with Tescos in it, but if a rival gradually forces the bigger supermarkets to make us think about some of our buying habits, then that can't be a bad thing.

Exactly - I'm not saying it's perfect at the moment, just one that could be.

Interesting that it is assumed that the people's supermarket experience is inferior? Perhaps it is.. I've not shopped there.

Also, TESCO has not always been the leader in market share.. so who knows where Netto will be in 20 years time! Though must admit Im tending to agree with you that it won't be up there...

A fresh cucumber is a fresh cucumber... ...the fact that we've been conditioned to want a particular shape is irrelevant - the quality is the same. Though I accept your point - it is not an identical product. Though I would still say that it is "competing" on price. I suppose it's how you view the product...

"TESCO has not always been the leader in market share..". True - discovered recently my Dad used to sell weighing machines to Tesco's founder when he was starting up.

I can see both sides of this debate and don't see any great pro-supermarket conspiracy but rather believe that best will survive, so time will tell if People's Supermarkets deserve to exist or not.

I'll revisit this thread in 10 years and re-post with hindsight.

I think Tesco will always be a big player but not just becuase of the grocery aspect they have fingers in literally every pie.

With this said allot of things I buy now I will buy from aldi, I came to the conclusion that things I don't mind getting cheaper I could do so from Aldi rather than Tesco

I belive within a few years Morrisons will have taken a back seat and will be investing allot more time in its Online Buisnes ideas like Kiddiecare rather than the Grocery industry.

I'd be intrested to see other peoples ideas though

Thanks,

How cool is that!

Down to time and how you value it. You could trek round all the different supermarkets, and take advantage of all the different offers, and no doubt save a few quid. Tinned tomatoes from Aldi will be no different from Tescos, and stock up on chicken nuggets and meatloaf from freezerland or whatever its called, and you'll save a fortune.

But I prefer to use Morrisons and Tescos, which saves me time, and gives me the quality (or perceived) products I'm after. If we're feeling particularly posh, then its a trip to M&S food

Unlikely after the Safeway aqusition, but interesting about KiddieCare, apparently they will keep it separate, and it will continue to be run by its former owners. Very shrewed, buy in the experience it needs to run it's new venture.

I have to agree with you. Morrisons have increased their market share substantially over the last few years (apart from a blip last year). They just have no decent online presence. Using the Kiddicare expertise I expect them to be going online with food before too long.

Will freely admit to not seeing that program (you have time for TV?)

If you have an ACL reconstruction you may have time..... Get well wishes on a postcard.....

For those interested - it's on Channel 4 this Sunday, 8PM.

Ouch!!!! Blimey, is that as a result of a sporting injury? Or just old age

Did catch the second half of the Peoples Supermarket last night. It really is all a bit amateurish, which I suppose the point as it's all volunteers, but it does give the whole thing a reality check. Most people have busy lives, and once the novelty has worn off, most people can't be bothered.

Good bit of social science in there, people who have signed up, and had spent money, were deliberately shopping elsewhere, because they felt guilty or embarrassed, or thought they would be questioned why they hadn't done their share of shifts.

So the more popular it becomes, the bigger the potential problem.

Was surprised about the uptake after the cameron visit. Publicity doesn't get any better than that, plus with a documentry film crew on site, yet member numbers only grew by about another 200 after the PM visit.

You'd expect a massive spike, as they cashed in on the publicity.

With that response rate, and with the drop out rate, I can't see a long term future with the current business model.

Doesn't it partly depend on how popular the PM is? Can imagine a lot of people deciding anything Cameron approves of must be A Bad Thing.
