How do I rank higher on Google and Yahoo?

Please have the following options to implement and check the results.
Backlinks for increased page ranking to an extent. Search engines such as Google, MSN and etc follow certain rules in order to determine the pagerank of a particular website.

I get about 20 times as many people from google as from yahoo. Although a bunch of that (maybe 50%) is from adwords. I haven't really bothered to do much yahoo optimization, and haven't signed up for overture. MSN is nothing but a pittance for me.
