Anyone knows if a PAT test is necessary for an event?

Hello,

I am supposed to do a talk next week, and I was asked to bring an electric compliance certificate if I need to plug anything. And I usually do better with a laptop and a projector.

I contacted the organisers and they told me that they meant a PAT test, but that for the last 5 years, no one was asked to provide one (this is just the people managing the building who require it), so I should not worry too much.

I called a friend who is an electrician, and he told me its costs about two pounds, but that he does not have the machine. But looking on the web for a local one in Cambridge, I could only see a minimum overall number of appliances (like 50 or 60), and mainly a focus for professional companies..

So my questions are:
- anyone who does a lot of presentations, is aware of this, and has been ever asked?
- anyone knows someone in Cambridge who provides PAT test for one or 2 applicances

Thanks a lot

Portable appliance testing, is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at work act 1974 Is it worth an electrician jumping in his van to test two appliances for you? Nope, I find a small electrical shop and take the units to them to test. As it happens any public place where you do presentations should also ask for the certificate... Most turn a blind eye, some will except that if you do not have a certificate that you can only plug anything in via a circuit breaker switch, Oh and I've never been asked for one and I'm always in offices and places of employment..

Thanks,
Barney

I actually have a circuit breaker, so I will take it with me. Thanks a lot, this was very useful!
