The number of people unemployed in the UK rose by 80,000 to 2.51 million in the three months to July, official figures have shown.

With the US at a 9.1% Jobless rate, that's a lot of jobless people out there.
Does this make it a buyers market for small businesses, or are you holding off recruiting at the moment?
I must admit, rightly or wrongly we make more use of outsourcing and temps rather than committing to full time employees, whats anyone else's experiences?
I am actually ![]() Wow that's staggering. Will have to check ours.... eh not better at all. informal sector lost 141 000 and formal sector 100 000. Wonder why that's happening all the time though. i don't generally see businesses doing that badly. Thanks, Dreamraven
Recently we've seen a bit more activity, or at least enquiries, with regard to company registration. I've been wondering if unemployment's got anything to do with this from two angles: 1) As you say people seeing it as a buyer's market for smaller business to employ at a cheaper rate, or 2) People out of a job feel like it's the perfect opportunity to start a company - as they don't have the opportunity cost of their current employment!
Sad to say, I think the interest in starting a business often comes from those who've lost their jobs (or who've never had the opportunity to get one) and who feel "I've nothing to lose, so I'll give it a go". I'm particularly anti the government and its agencies selling self-employment as the way out for school leavers unable to get their first jobs. This is the quickest way to ruin and heartache for most (not all) school-leavers.thumbsdown Linda CareersPartnershipUK
Strange you should ask. After seeing these crazy numbers I created a facebook page to promote local jobs a few days ago. Am not getting anything from it, but I just hope that other people can take something from it. ![]() Liverpool Jobs | Facebook Replacemyscreen.co.uk
National Insurance increased at the last budget. That is an incentive not to create jobs. Thanks, Truemanbrown
It will improve... and it is improving. At least its not as bad as in the States. diggersjohn33
and the majority of the jobless is apparently young people, graduates, etc. Quite sad for those who have spent a lot of time studying and working hard through education to then struggle to find work. I was in a similar situation a year or so ago and it is difficult out there for young graduates with little or no experience. Melanie
I don't have a problem recruiting, I can place an advert and will be inundated with replies. The problem I have is getting good quality people, recently took someone on, it took him six days to do one job that should only have taken two. Financially it never effected me as he was on a price, but the earache I got from the customer was unbelievable... ![]() Thanks, Barney
Maybe a practical test during the interview? Is that viable? Weed out any blaggers? |
