With access to resources and a marketing budget we can only dream of, even the big boys can get it wrong. It looks like Walt Disney is set to lose $200m on its John Carter Movie (about a military captain transported to Mars).

It is estimated that John Carter cost $250m to make and it is likely that Disney spent another $100m on marketing.

But the film, starring Taylor Kitsch, received average reviews, with New York's Time Out magazine describing it as "deadly dull".

BBC News - John Carter flop to cost Walt Disney $200m

I guess they'd better roll out a new Toy Story quickly

The critics have been wrong before.

They said Waterworld and The Postman were rubbish but I thoroughly enjoyed them both. Mind you I'm strange.

Disney, despite this flop, are doing fine. For me, they should be looking in the future towards gaming, which is clearly going to be the biggest segment of the entertainment industry. In this respect, franchises like Angry Birds are the 'new toy story' in this respect.

Thanks,

Hhahah, haven't seen the postman, and your right Waterworld wasn't as bad as everybody made it out to be !!! Not sure I can say that I actually enjoyed it.

I took my little sister to see John Carter and we actually both enjoyed it. Yes the plot was a bit thin, and it was perhaps a case of special effects just for the sake of it the film didn't have it's merits. I think the film was a good example of a production company not doing its due diligence !!!

I think the release date was all wrong, they should of waited till the kids were off for Easter, that would of given it a fighting chance. All in all it was a risky film, there were no new concepts in the film and it stuck to closely to the pre scripted structure of modern day sci-fi films. Introduce stranger that has super powers, stranger meets women the end .

The plot was to predictable and it didn't really mature or grow, his super powers should of been explored more and increased. The power to jump very high will not win anybody wars !!!

Just read what I've written and it feels like I've slated the film, just to recap I did actually enjoy it still. Went after eating a nandos, got a extra scoop of chunky monkey free so maybe I was already in a good mood
