Being in the directory market, this is no great surprise to me, and although a US survey, I think it's pretty standard across the globe.
Survey: Half Of Small Businesses Never Update Their Listings Online
So you move office, different phone number, it's amazing how many people never bother to even try to clean up their online marketing footprint. Most bigger directories should ask you to reverify at least annually, giving you a chance to update info, but with FB profiles, Google+ etc it is becoming a bigger and bigger challenge to manage your online details.
What is the social platforms would inculcate the same the thing? Ask for an annual or maybe once in every two years of data updation. I don't think it should be applicable for personal profiles but atleast for pages on facebook and LinkedIn company pages. Right? alicemenezes
Maybe it's just a case of forgetting. With moving a business etc. there are a lot of things that need to be done, so maybe remembering to update listings is the last thing they worry about and tends to be neglected? Thanks, Dreamraven
“but atleast for pages on facebook and LinkedIn company pages. Right?” Hi Alice, agree totally. If they are genuinely aiming themselves at business users, then I think they should have an annual verification. If nothing else, prompts you to return if you've not been back for 12 months. If businesses don't verify, then dump their listings, they're obviously no longer valid ![]()
“...maybe remembering to update listings is the last thing they worry about and tends to be neglected?” Without a doubt this is a big part of it. But if you are pinged and reminded to update your details, and then decide to ignore, or haven't updated contact details so you never get reminded, then maybe directories (me included), social media platforms etc should be more ruthless and simply delete the data. Would at least clean up the search engine index with a lot of unwanted rubbish. But will confess to needing to get my own house in order ![]() ![]()

Will get rid of a lot of clutter, but can't help feeling bad for those about to lose their listings. People with free listings probably wouldn't bat an eyelid at losing their listings, but what about those that paid? 'Tis an awful waste of money methinks. Thanks, Dreamraven
one of the main problems within businesses especially large organisations is that there are many depts who do their own directory listings and if a personal email used ie not enquiries or one that the whole dept has access to and the person leaves then no one knows or will remember. Have seen happen in many companies. promostamper
I think an annual review would be a great idea. With the current climate, a lot of businesses are down-scaling and re-locating to smaller offices - so you're right, the registry needs closer attention. Slough Business
I have registered the business in various directories and catalogs and keep track on them, but if I have to change details, I`d probably just go for the bigger ones, or the ones I can actually find on Google. Fixed Fee Legal Services | Bespoke Document Drafting | Document Templates
I've listed my details on so many online directories that I've actually forgotten most of them. Probably conduct a Google search for my business then keep a list of all the directories where I find my details. Alan |
