Hi guys

I am currently in the process of starting up a mobile catering business. My main customer base will obviously be within the local community, but I am wondering whether to market myself more towards local firms (i.e they may need caterers for events they are holding).

Initially I was going to market myself towards Joe Bloggs so to speak, who maybe have parties, funerals etc that they need catering for....but going towards businesses could be more profitable?

I understand i can do both but from a marketing point of view I always feel it's best to zoom in on one area rather than trying to be everything to everyone.

All help would be appreciated, thanks!

Can't speak from a catering business experience (I'd eat all the profits!), but if you are at the pre-start up stage, then you should be out doing market research and finding out these answers.

It's going to be critical for your business and marketing plan, as I would imagine costs would be different, more high end for parties, functions etc, versus bacon butties for businesses?

Wheres the demand? Is it local business or is it functions? Who are your competitors, who are their clients? Is there enough local market share for another catering company?

All revolves around market research I'm afraid, pounding the streets and talking to people. But do it right, and you will save a fortune later down the road.

I am not familiar with the catering business, however in my opinion when offering this kind of services, it is always best to gain positions locally and then start expanding!

I've recently started a mobile bar service (Licenced) and have successfully gained repeat business from some organisations and groups (Burns clubs etc.) who have regular meetings and dinner dances.

I have also left some leaflets with the caretakers in local community halls.

You will likely need someone to help you with your catering business.
The first thing you need to accomplish before putting up your catering business is to find out what are the regulations mandated by your local Health Department. Make sure you acquire all the requisite permits and inspection certificates. If you don

Personally I would suggest going for the joe bloggs of the world as I think you called them. If you target the firms it will be harder to persuade them at the start as it will be a lot of money for them to spend on a new company. Whereas just an individual spending only a bit is more likely to 'take the risk'
