So that's why there so many business awards!

The last 10 years or so seem to have buried us alive in self congratulating business awards and over use of the word "entrepreneur".

Although things like Dragons Den can be cringeworthy times, it's also great TV. But every new business owner seems to be an entrepreneur these days, and everywhere you look there are awards for this that and the other...

Obviously it's all about gaining publicity, plus a few quid or the chance of help from an experienced business person.

But the Beeb has a good article on this with a good quote from Brian Morgan, professor of entrepreneurship at Cardiff Metropolitan University:

Corporates run such competitions because they can log it as part of their CSR [corporate and social responsibility] strategy, and it helps market them to the younger customer...

...Universities largely do it because they are tasked with engaging with the local economy. At the same time, they can use the award scheme to advertise their courses to potential students

So there we go, as we all suspected it's just good old fashioned marketing

Same thing happens in the plumbing and heating industry, you get the plumber of the year and installer of the year. They each end up with a sticky logo for their vans, their mugshots in a trade magazine and a 4 x 4 perspex gong to stick on the fireplace, what they fail to mention is that they have had to purchase the award sponsors goods for a whole year. The bottom line is, it's all meaningless rubbish. On the plus side you do get to wear the bow tie thats been hanging in the wardrobe for 20 odd years...

Thanks,
Barney

Downside is I look like a night club bouncer

Maybe we could have the forum awards for best SEO spam comment

Lol, and the award can be our Anti-Spam Policy Template

honestly, I have always been quite suspicious of those business awards, although we don`t mind winning some!
