I'll confess to not really understanding this. So it's a budget, which the opposition refuses to agree to, which has caused a stalemate, and closure of Govt depts.
So how I read this, is Obama's party doesn't have a big enough majority to get this through, which has to go through the Senate and the Lower house, which is a separate debating chamber.
So if this was a UK budget, it would be like the House of Lords refusing to agree to a budget and bouncing it back to the Commons?
Seems a bizarre way to run a country, but not that savvy on US politics. Is this an unusual situation, having the senate and the lower house being controlled by different parties?
So the American Government shutdown crisis drags on, gets ever more serious, and now there is talk it could trigger a world wide recession? From how I understand it, it's almost like a civil war between Republicans and Democrats, but being fought in the House of Representatives. The Republicans don't like Obamas Healthcare plan, so they have shut down the Government, laid off tens of thousands of workers without pay, and are now going to let USA Corporation default on debts and not pay it's bills, inviting financial disaster with serious consequences. Seems a very odd state of affairs, from an outside perspective? I thought the idea of an elected Government was that they were in charge and running the show. Obviously not ![]()
“I thought the idea of an elected Government was that they were in charge and running the show...” It's an interesting debate! The American Constitution was written by a group of rebels who'd fought the colonial power (us! ![]() Rebels R' US deliberately wrote a Constitution where the executive power of any government could be check-mated by the other elements of government. It's surprisingly common for one party to be in charge of the Senate and the other the House of Representatives - and for each House to block each other. Then there's the added complication of the Supreme Court where judges elected during one party's administration can affect US constitutional matters for decades to come.... Linda CareersPartnershipUK
Blimey, interesting stuff! Not very up with American politics, so that makes more sense. So basically in a nutshell it's our fault ![]() |
