Hi,

I have a small business and I made a free listing on
cleverbusinessdirectory.co.uk some weeks ago and have now been asked to update it to a premium listing.

Has anybody had any experiences with this company?

I look forward to hearing any views you may have.

Thanks for your help.

Hi there, welcome aboard.

Probably not ethically correct me answering, as a directory owner, but hey ho

The reality is, if you put a free listing on most business directories, you will get asked to put your hand in your pocket. It might be Yell.com, ThomsonLocal, us, or any one else.

Our approach is softsell and send you an email, the decision is up to you. Others will badger you with sales calls and go down the hard sell route.

Regardless of the method, make your own decision, and do some research. Directories have had a bad press from the year dot, and a lot of it is justified. But not all can tarred with the same brush.

Forget SEO strategies and millions of directory links, those days have long gone. A directory listing is about marketing to humans, and generating enquires. So look to see if a directory is established, look around for general feedback, and use the armada of free tools on the internet to do some low level research.

These may not give you a definite answer, but they will give you enough information to make an informed decision, and decide if it is worth parting with any cash

So back to your question, I've not heard of them, but lets look at the information that is publicly available.

Cleverbusinessdirectory.co.uk WHOIS, DNS, & Domain Info - DomainTools

Domain name:
cleverbusinessdirectory.co.uk

Registrant:
Mathias Kluge

Registrant type:
Non-UK Individual

Registrant's address:
Waterloo Road
Hong Kong
Hong Kong
852
Hong Kong

So the business is registered in Hong Kong = alarmbells thumbsdown

Lets look at the business details on their website:
Clever Business Directory Ltd 15A Southbrook Court, Queens Street, Newbury Berkshire RG46 1AE | Company No: 10497

Hmmm..... looks like a non existent company. You can check at companies house, or to be honest this is a more user friendly site: companycheck.co.uk

So Hong Kong registered with a fake UK address.. lots of Alarm Bells!!

Just to finish it off, they have a Google Page Rank of 0 and no Alexa Rank which although very basic indicators, still tell you this site has no traffic.

Run away and don't pay them a penny!!

So the OP has conveniently dropped a link to a crap directory that nobody in their right mind will want to register on..yay!

Oh you cynic Sandra, not seriously suggesting the OP has anything to do with said dodgy directory?

It was obviously a genuine question, with an erm IP address based in Cyprus... bugger... I'm too soft....

Well, any kind of business listing will charge you for premium services, they have to make money out of it anyway.

However, it really depends on the method they're using to convince you. If this is simple call or an e-mail with all the benefits outlined, that is fine for me.

On the other hand, Yell.com specialises in very hard phone selling. They even have the policy to never hang up, unless a customer hangs up first.
(well, at least in my case)

Business listings are great things to promote your webpage locally, so provided they won't charge you too much, it's worth a try
