Split testing can hurt your SEO - becareful

Great article from Search Engine Land and something I hadn't considered before.

Split testing (or A/B testing) is a long proven and superb way of optimising your website conversion pages. Send your visitors down 2 slightly different routes or to slightly different landing pages and see which one performs the best.

It allows you to react to your customer feedback and make controlled changes, comparing results with your original page, but using live traffic. Sometimes just moving an image on a page or making a call to action clearer can give you a spike in conversions.

But can this activity hurt you SEO wise?

ie creating duplicate content, getting the wrong page ranked by Google, or links missing?

But there is a solution, it just needs a little thought. Canonical Tags and 301 Redirects. If you don't understand what they are, talk to your webdesigner, but certainly worth giving it some thought if you decide to start split testing.

Avoiding SEO Pitfalls During Split Testing - Search Engine Land

We just recently finished some and it can certainly open your eyes into how users interact on your site. Does anyone else do any or had any experience of split testing?
