Received this email last week:

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that My Local Services has been nominated in our prestigious 2015 Business Excellence Awards.

Over the past two months we have been encouraging specialist nominations on a global scale, reaching out to over 500,000 global professionals worldwide...blah blah

All we require from you at this stage is to reply to this email simply stating "I Accept my nomination".  We will then come back to you with the next steps.

Please note that there are no costs involved in accepting your nomination or if you do go on to win an award and that email is sent for information purposes only. However, we do need your reply to move forward...

Scam radar went into full power mode so spent a good 3 minutes googling before making my mind up.

It seems this company are a professional awards company. In fact looking at their website, they have an award for every occasion, every position in a company, and just about every kind of industry! Oh and it seems to run in every country as well

and it goes on, and on.....

But to be fair, there is some money to be made in awards:

But there do seem to be plenty of companies that are happy to show off their awards and obviously proud to receive them. I've no doubt there is a cost at some point, even if its an overpriced award ceremony.

Or am I just being a cynical grumpy and ungrateful git?

So who nominated you? Clive?

I tend to find any email that has in it 'there are no costs involved' usually has some sort of cost element the further you get sucked in to the sales spill.... In this particular case you probably have to attend a dinner function or something similar having parted with £300 for the table... You'll then be given your wooden plaque with 'Nominated Plonker of the Year' emblazoned upon it.....

Thanks,
Barney

Was trying to work out how many awards they do. Has to be about 40 different nominations x 100 different business sectors x by every Country on the planet.

That's an awful lot of judging and dinner functions!

Buried in the blurb of their website I saw this great line..

While we offer packages to help the winner promote their achievement, there is never any commercial requirement and further, no award can be guaranteed by payment, only by merit, sheer determination and hard work...

So with the sheer volume of nominations, can't believe it's taken 10 years for the world to realise how brilliant I am. Just need a promotional package now to convey that message

I had to smile reading this. For years I have been receiving emails from this company who says I have been nominated as the exclusive UK representative of this legal website, in my area of the law. If I pay a few hundred quid I get all sorts of membership benefits.

It's very flattering but pretty stupid - if they're going to do that convincingly, they should spam people who have the profile to support such a position.

The best bit is, they really seem to believe it will work with someone.

Just chased me up again this morning, think I'll reply with a link to this thread

Hi Steve (and anyone who's received such messages),

Can you please post some sort of proof that there was indeed a/some message(s) and it was/they were addressed to you? Like the full email headers (without any personally identifiable info such as the full name/full email of the person emailing you), the html message and anything like that? You can use Pastebin if it's easier.

You clearly provided enough evidence in my opinion that you you've been sent unsolicited messages where it was stated that you were nominated for a variety of awards that happen to come from magazines owned by the same company, but it would be nice to also see further evidence.

Many thanks.

Markus

Hi Markus

I think you are getting confused between spam and scam. Yep we got unsolicited messages, I don't need to check email headers for that, but then I get sent hundreds of spam emails every day.

But the point is that the actual whole awards concept is suspect. Or call it opportunistic business, unethical business, maybe predators of the gullible, or I just call it simply a scam.

But for some that think the expense and theatre of self delusion or purchased credibility gives a good business return when able to show a winners badge on their website, then good luck to them. Alternatively just make something up in photoshop and put that on your website. eg: After a survey of 4 old ladies, Steve was found to be the number 1 business man in the  Alcester Post Office queue. Trophy and certificate in the post, £3 Morrisons meal deal award dinner.

So have you been approached, or is this something you are considering?
