What happened to poor old Nokia?

From Businessweek:
The must-have brand a decade ago, Nokia is slashing phone prices and sacrificing profitability after failing to develop a device with the same appeal as the iPhone or Research in Motion Inc.

Does an iPhone only last 12 months, though?

The thing about the iPhone and the Android phones is that the functions and features are generally added by the user. Ten years ago, the only thing you really put into a phone was your contacts list. Today, my boyfriend and I both have the G1, both bought about 12 months ago, and because of the Android Marketplace, our phones, identical out of the box, involve entirely different user experiences. We've invested a lot of time getting them set up 'just so' which we're not likely to sacrifice just for the sake of having the latest model. There's also the issue that if we want new software features, we can download them - we don't have to buy a whole new phone unless there's a substantial hardware difference.

Interesting point, maybe this will prompt a move away from "I must have the shiny new upgrade every 12 months". Or in my case, now I've just worked out how to use it, I'm landed with another one!

Hmm, can see smart phones playing the green card now, less waste etc..

Nice post Mary.

Smart phones are definately the way forward and that is where Nokia have lagged behind the competion.
They are still floggin the sybian OS which is now old hat compared to the iphone and the Android OS.

AS Mary said people want to customise there experience and Nokia is stuck in the old skool handset mentality.

and the last 2 Nokias I have had the Hardware has been shocking buttons falling off. the case cracking the battery losing its full charge after the phoen was 6 months old etc, etc, etc.

I am about to upgrade and I have shortlisted:
1: HTC Desire running Google Droid
2:Crackberry bold 9750
3: Iphone.

I am BlackBerry person. I have an iPod, but I need buttons on my phone, so iPhone is not really for me.

What happened to poor old Nokia?.....

Good question, does anybody believe todays announcement, BBC News - Nokia launches first open source Symbian phone will revive their fortunes?

More details here, Nokia - Press Release

Yikes, and I still want to make certain a phone will take calls and allow me to make them. Got to get some peace sometimes surely...

From what ive heard from friends, the new android system isnt really the best to happen yet. They have loads of problems with it. I havent tried it myself yet tho. my tech budget has been ploughed into my PC so i havent bought any new phones yet.

Has anyone read reports on the net regarding these problems?

Thanks,
Dreamraven

Not read any reports on the net, but me, my boyfriend, and a couple of our mates have had Android phones (mostly the G1) for over 12 months now and they're still going strong. No idea what the "loads" of problems might be.

it could be that these friends might not have been tech savvy, but they kept complaining abt the emails, the interface, and about apps that seem to intruse when they are working on the phone.

It could have been the phones themselves as well, because i havent seen any news abt problems either.

Thanks,
Dreamraven
