I tend to have fits and spurts, and if it's been a busy week, normally end up with a social media friday

One of the (many!) reasons I like mylocalforums is that contributors are realistic!
Its a Funny Old World... 7th November 2013 3:40 PM
Asking candidates to "tell" you what they think they're financially worth goes against the grain of "Britishness", Barney!

Also it tends to act as a (poor quality) test of candidates' personalities and job circumstances. The more adventurous, self-confident types who're fairly happy in stable jobs will ask for a significant increase on what they're already getting ... and be happy (for a while) if they get it.

The more "careful" candidates will ask for less than they feel they deserve ... and then feel aggrieved.

Those worried about their jobs or their employer will also ask less - quite probably less than you'd feel happy offering.

Surely it's in your interests to find out what the local pay range is for good tradespeople and then tell recruits the offer will be somewhere within that range?
UK is a service sector economy... 5th November 2013 3:31 PM
We're certainly a polarised economy ....

Much of the growth mentioned has been in the financial services sector, based in the City of London.

when it's your business the highs are higher! More than outweighs the lows being lower!

CONGRATS!!!

I thought the idea of an elected Government was that they were in charge and running the show...

It's an interesting debate!

The American Constitution was written by a group of rebels who'd fought the colonial power (us!). These rebels - otherwise known as "Founding Fathers" - unsurprisingly didn't think much of the UK system as it then was (where power over the state was largely held by whichever group had the ear and support of the king).

Rebels R' US deliberately wrote a Constitution where the executive power of any government could be check-mated by the other elements of government. It's surprisingly common for one party to be in charge of the Senate and the other the House of Representatives - and for each House to block each other. Then there's the added complication of the Supreme Court where judges elected during one party's administration can affect US constitutional matters for decades to come....
Great Question! 15th October 2013 1:55 PM
sometimes i wonder how "experts" get their jobs.

It's their social skills and the splendour of their suits!
Are key words now irrelevant? 15th October 2013 1:50 PM
Thanks Steve for a very helpful explanation and set of links.

Sorry, am now hoping for a bit more spoon-feeding. You said:-

Google has also created a data highlighter tool which you can access in WMT, where you can point and click at content and tell Google that way.

What's WMT please? Can I find it even though I don't use Chrome?

Have thought that if I go to my Google account the data highlighter tool will probably be there?

Will start investigating typical search terms for my site and see what the new approach "does" to them.

I worry there may be no particular benefit in the new system for a site like mine which is designed to appeal to the smallish minority of searchers thinly scattered in most English regions who're willing to pay for good careers counselling.

I still appear to be on page 1 of Google for most of the terms I'd expect to be but the new system seems a lot less useful than the old as a handy guide to my competitors.

What do others think?
Are key words now irrelevant? 11th October 2013 10:41 AM
Can I now forget worrying about key words and just write text the way I want to???? New advice on SEO sent to my inbox suggests exactly that ... but I'm sceptical.
