Heard on the news this morning that any minor convictions that a teen picks up should be "erased" once they hit 18 in an effort to increase their chances of gaining employment or going on to further education.

I know i have picked up a reputation for being a hang man for my tough stance on other threads but i actually do agree with this and hope it gets pushed through.

I was no angel in my teens, i possibly fractured a Law or 2 but never actually broke any Laws and was never arrested. Its interesting that it could have meant that if i ever had been arrested my career could have taken a totally different path, something you don't think about at the time.

Do you think its important for any convictions (minor only) should be disclosed to potential employers, or should they be erased, as its being suggested, at 18.

I'm sure i only picked up the essence of the story but be interesting to get any thoughts.

This seems to have drifted passed without any major fuss, reading that GM has recalled a total of 17.7 million cars in the USA, which is actually more than the total numbers of cars sold!

Seems they are having difficulty with their ignitions and it is directly linked to a few deaths over in America.

Quote from the article on MSN - full story here if you want to read it all

"GM – the world’s second-biggest car company – is replacing keys on affected cars after it was found that ignition keys carrying too much weight from heavy key rings can jump out of the "on" position if the cars hit a particularly harsh bump.

If this were to happen, it could turn the car’s engine off, disabling the power steering system and potentially activating the steering lock.

It gets worse, though. It turns out that due to the way the cars have been programmed, when the key flicks to the "off" position the vehicle’s airbags are no longer operational. This means passengers won’t have the luxury of this safety feature in the event of a resulting accident.

GM is asking all owners to remove any "excessive weight" from their key rings to try and reduce the potential for the problem to occur, but that all cars will eventually receive the fix:

"The use of a key with a hole, rather than a slotted key, addresses the concern of unintended key rotation due to a jarring road event, such as striking a pothole or crossing railroad tracks."

According to GM, the current key problem has caused eight crashes and six injuries."

I have a key-less ignition - i use the key to open the car and then i put it in my pocket & i have a start/stop button - maybe more car makers should adopt this approach?

Must admit I had noticed in my local Morrisons that the self check out tills stated they did not accept the £2 coin. Thought it odd but as 90% of the time i pay on my credit card it doesnt affect me.

Was reading this report (MSN News)that states there are people using a foreign coin initially in the Midlands has become a wider problem so all self checkouts within the group have now been barred from taking the coin.

Looks like they are fixing the issue but how long has the coin been in circulation now and dont they test for these kind of issues?

Presumably the coin looks different but must weigh roughly the same, so if you take cash be aware!

Was reading this story about a man who brandished an air rifle at Police, who initially ordered him to drop his weapon so they shot him in the stomach with a baton round. This failed and he raised his rifle again to Police who then shot him in the leg with a live round shattering his thigh bone

The chap then complained about the Police shooting him

Think its fairly straight forward to be honest, raise a weapon of any kind, but especially a rifle, albeit an air rifle, then i think you can safely assume you will be shot, especially if a warning round has already been fired!

What planet are these people on?

Sainsburys report sales drop 17th June 2014 3:05 PM
Read in the Daily Mail today that Aldi will be opening 50 - 60 new stores every year until 2021, not sure how many Tesco's or Sainsbury's will be opening or closing in that period

Just seen that Morrisons plan to cut 2600 managers jobs - seems they are going to cull "layers" of managers.

Maybe they can apply for the new stores in Aldi?

Reading in todays news that changes in meat safety checks could mean that we are going to be tucking in to diseased meat !

"Under new European regulations, supported by Britain's Food Standards Agency (FSA), they will have to rely on visual checks alone."

"Ron Spellman, a British meat inspector with 30 years' experience, told the BBC that new regulations which took effect from June 1 risked diseased parts of animals going undetected. Last year we know that there were at least 37,000 pigs' heads with abscesses or tuberculosis lesions in lymph nodes in the head. They won't be cut now. There's no way to see those little abscesses, little tuberculosis lesions without cutting those lymph nodes."

The FSA counter the claims by stating "The FSA's chief operating officer, Andrew Rhodes, told the BBC it was better to have a hands-off system using visual checks to reduce cross-contamination, because bugs like E. coli and campylobacter are causing scientists more concern."

Obviously there is more to this than a sensationalism journalist but i was told/taught in college if meat was cooked properly most bacteria were killed off anyway?

Not sure which is worse now, but no doubt this debate will go on !

I always knew that certain sausages contained reclaimed meat, what i didn't know was that pigs heads were involved - "Meat from pigs' heads is recovered by specialised parts of boning plants and goes into pies, sausages and other processed foods."

Drugs bust after 999 call blunder 17th June 2014 2:31 PM

And the idiot of the month award goes to ...................... MSN - Drugs bust after 999 call

Obviously not the sharpest tool in the box, seems this chump somehow dialed 999 and then hung up making the Police respond as a concern for welfare issue.

Upon arriving at the location a local bobby discovered 18 cannabis plants in his front room, promptly leading to an arrest - oh dear - not a good day

I'm actually ok at maths - had a really good teacher in my final year before taking my "o" level - she pushed me hard but i passed so results speak for themselves.

Mind you saying that, my dad was a teacher - wonder if it was in the genes after all?

Sickness absense at record low 17th June 2014 2:18 PM

I am quite lucky that i don't have that many days off sick.

The odd days i am, 99% of the time i go in to work and usually if i can't face a full day i leave early.

I actually got sent home by my ex boss once. 3 weeks after i started we were on skeleton staff due to Christmas, 4 people covering the usual 20. I had proper flu, not just man flu!, i was literally hugging the radiator i was that cold. Least it proved i was really ill lol

I am guessing you couldn't bring yourself up to saying: Google me!Ha!”

Didnt want to scare the chap - was my first visit after all !
