Apparently the number of days taken off through sickness is at a record low with workers taking an average of 4.9 off a year. Full story if you want - BBC News

Didnt pay it much attention to the article really until my phone rang this morning......

A very poorly sounding Steve on the line " Sorry mate, not coming in today" - maybe just a bit too poorly sounding if you get my meaning  Hmm - he's just had a week off on holiday !

Far be it from me to make any comment, but maybe he just had a heavy session last night!!!!

Err he cant see this bit of the forum, can he ?

On a serious point, my previous job i worked with someone who was always off ill, drove me insane as i had to cover them when they were off - company couldnt get rid of her due to Rules & Regs! Thats fine if you are a massive company and can sustain lazy employees, but what about the smaller companies?

Are you affected by lazyitus employee syndrome?

A weeks holiday in Devon, the missus has gone down with the flu and I've got an ear infection, thus proving holidays are definitely overated

When I worked in corporate land and used to run a team of techies, I wasn't the most politically correct when it came to people going sick. I used to refer to people phoning in sick as the wobbly voice syndrome, as no matter what the ailment, everyone seems to perfect the croaky/poorly sounding voice.

I did get pulled up by my boss for interrogating people over the phone as to what was up with them, and had explained to me that you can't do things like that in civvy street

I think sickness absence can be a good measure of a business. The more there is over the average I would say staff are not happy and things need investigating. I am a big advocate of richard Branson...happy staff happy customers.

Thanks,

I am quite lucky that i don't have that many days off sick.

The odd days i am, 99% of the time i go in to work and usually if i can't face a full day i leave early.

I actually got sent home by my ex boss once. 3 weeks after i started we were on skeleton staff due to Christmas, 4 people covering the usual 20. I had proper flu, not just man flu!, i was literally hugging the radiator i was that cold. Least it proved i was really ill lol
